XFL Logo and Name Reveals Give Teams their Identities

August 22, 2019 - XFL (XFL)

The XFL revealed the logos for all eight teams on Tuesday. Here are some initial thoughts:

Dallas Renegades

The logo features an outlaw, while the nickname that has been used by several sports teams. The logo is similar to the former Arena Football League team the Dallas Desperados which played from 2002 till 2008. The United States Football League Orlando Renegades played one season in 1985 and went 5-13, while the Ottawa Renegades played in the Canadiian Football League from from 2002 till 2005. A teal and black color scheme could be a good fit for them.

DC Defenders

It makes perfect sense to have a military theme in Washington, DC. The logo looks more like a crest such as one a soccer team would use. The lightning bolts are a nice touch. Red white and blue uniforms could create a sharp look.

Houston Roughnecks

With XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck playing five seasons with the NFL Houston Oilers from 1982 to 1986, it isn't a big surprise they went with a logo similar to the former NFL team. The league worked an "H" into the logo to represent Houston. With red and blue in the logo, it bears watching how closely the uniforms might mirror the Oilers' threads. The fans in Houston my love the new blue.

Los Angeles Wildcats

Having LA in the logo is a feature also used by baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers. The orange and maroon color combination should make for some outstanding uniforms. A Wildcats mascot could be very popular with fans, especially children.

New York Guardians

The logo featured the head of a gargoyle, a prehistoric predator. The logo is similar to the Arena Football League's old San Jose SaberCats. A black and red color scheme for uniforms could be a good way to go.

Seattle Dragons

Dragons don't have many ties to the Seattle area or anywhere base in reality, for that matter. The logo is similar to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers. Dragons has been used in football before with the New York Dragons who played in the Arena Football League from 2001 till 2008. They have a chance to come up with very creative helmets and uniforms using many different color schemes.

St. Louis BattleHawks

St. Louis went with a creative name with winged warriors ready to fight. The sword in the middle of the logo is a nice touch. Plus when flipped upside down, the letters "STL" are visible. The team could utilize a blue and white color scheme for the uniforms and implement the sword into them.

Tampa Bay Vipers

The Vipers nickname has been used in football before by arenafootball2's Tennessee Valley Vipers from 2000 till 2004. In 2010 they played in the Arena Football League as the Alabama Vipers. The XFL has a chance go out of the box with some eye-popping uniforms.
