Philadelphia Charge News Release

VILLANOVA, PA (August 1, 2002) - Professional flatland rider and X-Games favorite Chad Degroot will be in attendance when the Philadelphia Charge host the San Diego Spirit at Villanova Stadium on Saturday, August 3. The contest, which begins at 7:00 p.m., contains serious playoff ramifications, as a win or a tie will clinch a postseason berth for Philadelphia.

Degroot, a 28-year-old from Green Bay, WI, was recently selected as NORA's "Best Flatland Rider" of 2002 and has been competing in the sport for 13 years. Flatland riding is a form of freestyle bicycling requiring a great deal of technical precision in which participants do tricks on flat surfaces such as parking lots.

Degroot will be entertaining fans pre-game with his dazzling moves along Villanova Stadium's track. During the game he will also be signing autographs and meeting with fans in the FunZone. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Charge (10-3-5, 35pts) is currently locked in a battle with the Carolina Courage and finds themselves just one point away from clinching a postseason berth. In addition, the team will have revenge on its mind, as it has yet to win a game this season against San Diego (4-10-4, 16pts). The Spirit handed Philadelphia its first loss of the season back on May 19 with a 1-0 decision and then played the Charge to a 1-1 draw on June 23. Philadelphia player has yet to score against San Diego this season, with the team's lone tally coming on a Spirit own goal. In addition, there will be a post-game concert featuring TRUEvibe.
