Bellingham Slam News Release

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam has added former Western Washington guard Rico Wilkins to the team's roster for the 2013 season, the team announced today.

The 5-foot-11 native of Dallas, Texas, recently completed his senior season with the Vikings, helping WWU reach the NCAA Division-II Final Four for the third time in school history. Wilkins was also a member of WWU's championship-winning team in 2012.

The addition of Wilkins continues a tradition that has seen some of WWU's top talent from the past decade stay in Bellingham to compete for the Slam during their International Basketball League season in the spring. Wilkins will be the 17th former Viking to put on a Slam uniform in the team's eight year history.

For Western Washington, Wilkins averaged 7.9 points per game over three seasons after transferring from Yakima Valley Community College. Throughout his collegiate career, he provided a valuable spark coming off the bench and was one of WWU's most accurate three-point shooters as a senior. He concluded his Viking career by posting a season-high 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting from downtown in WWU's championship semifinal loss to Drury on March 30.

Known for his frenetic style of play and tenacious defense, Wilkins should fit right in on a Slam squad that averaged 131 points per game last season.

The addition of Wilkins brings the Slam's roster to a total eight players, with the remaining two to three spots to be filled in the coming days. The Slam opens the 2013 IBL season at home on April 19 against the Vancouver Volcanoes. A 7 p.m. tip-off is scheduled for Whatcom Pavilion.
