Each team will have two minutes to make a selection and there will be up to four rounds. A team with 18 players may draft a 19th player, but will have just 24 hours to waive a player to get back to a maximum roster size of 18. However, if after the first round a team is at 19, they must waive a player before making a selection in subsequent rounds.

The order of the draft was determined by the WUSA final standings for the 2001 season and will be held in reverse order of those standings. The order is as follows: Carolina Courage, Washington Freedom, Boston Breakers, San Diego Spirit, Philadelphia Charge, New York Power, Atlanta Beat and the San Jose CyberRays (WUSA Champion).

WUSA launched last April with the following eight teams: Atlanta Beat, Boston Breakers, Carolina Courage, New York Power, Philadelphia Charge, San Diego Spirit, San Jose CyberRays and Washington Freedom.
