WPS Players Impress at Euro 2009

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 10, 2009) - The 2009 European Championships concluded Thursday in Helsinki, Finland with Germany winning its fifth consecutive title dating back to 1995 and demonstrating that they could be the team to beat for World No. 1-ranked United States and World No. 2-ranked Brazil at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cupâ¢.
Several WPS players stood out over the course of Euro 2009 including Boston Breakers stars Kelly Smith and Alex Scott, who helped lead England into the final before falling to Germany. WPS All-Star Eniola Aluko of the Saint Louis Athletica also contributed to the English success. Aluko and Smith each notched three goals during the tournament. Chicago Red Stars midfielder Karen Carney was the tournament leader with four assists, while Los Angeles Sol midfielder Camille Abily of France was selected as a Player of the Match in the group stage and had two goals in four games.
In all, a WPS player was selected as the Player of the Match on four occasions at Euro 2009 including Smith (twice), Aluko and Abily.
"It was great to see WPS players have such an impact on the 2009 European Championships," said WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci. "Arriving at Euro 2009 match ready from our 2009 WPS Season proved to bring out the best in these players during the tournament. I'm certain that as WPS continues to grow and develop we will have a tremendously positive impact on the level of play at the national team level in international competitions in the future."
