Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL- The finest season in franchise history continues to bring awards and accolades in its wake as three members of the 2004 Schaumburg Flyers have been named to the prestigious Baseball America All-Independent League All-Star Team. Baseball America is a widely read magazine by fans, industry executives, players and coaches alike with coverage of all levels of baseball.

Flyers RHP Hank Woodman was named to the All-Independent First Team while 1B Mario Delgado and SS Geoff McCallum received second team honors. All three were also named to the Northern League's Post-Season All-Star Team in September.

As previously documented, Woodman had another outstanding season in 2004, his fourth in Flyer pinstripes. The staff ace went 6-6 with a sparkling 1.95 ERA and a league leading 141 strikeouts. Schaumburg won all five of Woodman's no-decision starts, giving the club an 11-6 record in his 17 starts. His ERA ranked second in the league behind fellow All-Independent first teamer Brian Mazone (Joliet).

Woodman stepped to the forefront at playoff time, winning an elimination game in Kansas City on September 11 to keep the Flyers alive. He also pitched seven strong innings in St. Paul on September 19, departing with the lead in Game 5 of the championship series before the Saints rallied to win the game and league title.

Despite batting .318 with 23 HR and a Northern League record 104 RBI, Delgado was placed on the second team as Doug Jennings of Long Island (Atlantic League) earned the first team nod at first base. Jennings, who played briefly for the Cubs in 1993, batted .359 with 17 HR-84 RBI at 39 years of age. He has since turned 40 this fall. The 25-year old Delgado hit .372 in post-season action with 4 HR-13 RBI.

McCallum set a Northern League single-season record for hits with 138 while starting in 103 of Schaumburg's 106 games at shortstop. He batted .358 and scored 86 runs, setting single season Flyer records in both categories.

The Northern League placed six players on the first team, five of whom were on playoff teams. League champion St. Paul had two first team picks, closer Chris Chavez and OF Adam Olow, the NL batting champion. Saints 2B Justin Hall joined Delgado and McCallum on the second team. Kansas City's 1-2 punch of Eddie Pearson (1st Team) and Ray Brown (2nd Team) found their names on the list with Pearson the only repeat NL honoree from last year's first team. Both were named at the D.H. spot. More information is available at northernleague.com.

Somerset SS Victor Rodriguez, an Atlantic League player, was the Independent League Player of the Year.

Notes: The Flyers have a first team selection for the second consecutive year...C Kirk Pierce was honored by Baseball America last year...
