Women's Football Heading West

Nashville, TN-The National Women's Football Association (NWFA) announced today that they are ready to grant licenses for football teams in California. League officials hope to have teams ready to play in 2005. With 37 teams, the NWFA is the largest tackle football league in the world for women.

Tryouts have been scheduled for a team in the Antelope Valley (Lancaster, CA.) for the 10th and 17th of January. Tryouts will be held at McAdam Park in Palmdale. Located at 38115 30th Street East, Palmdale, CA 93550. Registration begins at 10:00am. All participants must be at least 18 and have their own health insurance. There is a one time $35.00 try out fee. Anyone interested in playing, coaching or owning the team should attend.

"We've been getting phone calls an emails for over 3 years from ladies in California that want to play football in our league," states Debby Lening, VP. "Now that we have a TV deal and solid teams in place for 2004, we're ready to open teams in California. We're looking for coaches and General Managers to operate the teams until we find owners. We hope to have teams playing exhibition games on the West Coast later in the 2004 season," adds Lening.

Expansion teams for 2004 include: Shoals SmasHers (AL), Roanoke Revenge (VA), Evansville Express (IN). Denton Stampede (TX), Dallas Dragons (TX), Austin Outlaws (TX) and Wisconsin Riveters (WI).

Women's football is one of the most exciting new professional sports on the planet and in the past three years, the NWFA has gotten betting lines on Championship Games and been featured in a special segment on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The NWFA has also been featured in the New York Times, The Today Show, Nickelodeon, CBS Evening News and many other major media outlets.

The NWFA has a 5 year TV deal with The Football Network. The league wrapped up its 2003 season with the National Women's Football Championship Game that was held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville in front of 5,726 fans. The league website receives over 2 Million hits per month.
