Women\'s Full Contact Football Returns to the Ocean State
September 12, 2002 - Independent Women's Football League (IWFL)
Rhode Island Intensity News Release
The Rhode Island Riptide, the newest addition to the Independent Women's Football League, will hold two tryouts from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday September 8th and 15th at Pawtucket's Dennis O'Brien Memorial Field for potential players and cheerleaders.
Currently, this is Rhode Island's ONLY professional sports opportunity for women. The Riptide team will create an environment where women can fulfill their dreams of playing football, a game that many women grew up watching but rarely had the opportunity to play. Team owner Sandra Frizzell hopes to show the youth of Rhode Island that there are role models in their own backyards. "We want to give the state a sports team to stand behind and be proud of," she said. "Even though we are the smallest state, we have the biggest passion and spirit in the country."
Anyone who wishes to try out for the team or cheerleading squad must be at least 18 years old and have proof of current health insurance. Experience is not necessary, but an athletic background is helpful. Those interested in cheerleading and/or dancing must bring a two-minute piece of music and a routine. A one time processing fee of $50 will be collected from all participants.
Members of the media are welcomed and strongly encouraged to attend these tryouts. This is an excellent opportunity to meet the potential players, our exceptional coaching staff, and all managerial personnel. For one-on-one interviews, photo opportunities, or any other accommodations, please contact the Media Director.
The IWFL, founded in 2000, currently has 17 teams across the United States and Canada. Besides Rhode Island, only five other teams are hosted in the Northeastâin New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, Montreal, and Philadelphia. The league believes in player safety, honesty, community service, and overall integrity. Every player is insured, every team donates a portion of net game revenue to local sponsored charities, and all owners pledge their commitment to high ethical standards. These principles alone set the IWFL apart from all other women's football leagues.
