Manchester Wolves News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. (February 2, 2006) - The arenafootball2 league office announced today that wide receiver/defensive back Ron Smalls and offensive/defensive linebacker Abdul Shabazz-Wiggins have been assigned to the Manchester Wolves, New Hampshire's professional Arena Football team.
Smalls (5-9, 175) had a strong campaign for the Wolves in 2005 during which the rookie from Morehouse saw action in all 17 Manchester Wolves games. The Sandy Spring, MD native collected 59.0 total tackles (third highest on the team), two interceptions, five pass breakups, and two forced fumbles defensively.
"Smalls was a rookie last season and picked up the game really quick," Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett said. "Initially he was just a defensive specialist, but by the end of the season he became a great two-way player which we'll get to see a lot more of this year."
Wiggins (6-1, 328), a four-year af2 veteran from Chowan, only played in two games for the Wolves during the 2005 season, collecting 1.5 total tackles, and a fumble recovery. Wiggins departed early to Portsmouth, VA, where he's been serving as a Deputy Sheriff for the past four years. The Newbern, NC native was part of the Wolves inaugural season in 2004, playing in 15 games, totaling 12.5 total tackles, one sack, ten quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
"Unfortunately Abdul was only here part of the season last year, he could have been very valuable to us during our run for the cup," added Bennett. "Wiggins is a guy who'll be entering his 5 th season in the league and will bring a lot of size and experience to the table in 2006."
With these two additions, the Wolves training camp roster has ballooned up to 33 players. The only question puzzling Wolves fans and opposing af2 teams before entering the start of training camp on March 16 th, is the quarterback status.
"I know everyone wants to know who's going to be the next Wolves quarterback, Well, I'm not going to let the cat out of the bag yet," quipped Bennett, who's an AFL Hall of Fame QB himself. "You'll know soon enough though, so check back in about a week."
