Manchester Wolves News Release

MANCHESTER , N.H. (November 8, 2005) - The arenafootball2 league office announced today that

Mike Abate and Brian Gordon have been assigned to the Manchester Wolves. The two players earned their spot with the Wolves after excelling in the team's first open tryout on Saturday, Nov. 5. The Wolves now have four (4) players officially on their training camp roster for 2006.

"These guys earned their shot based on their performance at the tryout," Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett said. "Now that they have an opportunity it's going to be up to them to come to camp in shape and ready to compete again."

Abate, a 6-3, 225-pound free agent from Southern Connecticut State University, is trying to earn a spot with the Wolves as a quarterback. The Norwalk, Conn. native started for two years under center with the Owls (2003-04) and led the team to a 17-4 record during that span. He finished his career as one of the school's best quarterbacks ever, setting a single season record with 28 touchdown passes in 2004 and setting another school mark with six touchdown passes in one game. Abate also tied a SCSU record with 53 career touchdown passes. As a senior, the former Seattle Mariners farmhand threw for 2,550 yards and was named to the Northeast-10 Conference second team.

Gordon also earned an invitation to camp and will compete in March for a roster spot at fullback/linebacker after a stellar career as a defensive lineman at Assumption College. The 6-foot-2, 255-pounder from Quaker Hill, Conn. had his best season as a senior in 2004 in which he finished third in the Northeast-10 Conference with 12 quarterback sacks and second with a team-record 33 tackles-for-loss. Gordon received numerous individual accolades for his performance, including being named to the Football Gazette all-region first-team and the Football Gazette All-America second-team. He also finished his career with 256 total tackles (13th on Greyhounds' all-time list) and a school-record 27 sacks.

Due to the success and demand of the Wolves first tryout, the team may hold another workout in late February or early March. Details of that tryout will be announced if and when they become available.
