Wichita Wings News Release

Wichita, KS. - The Wichita Wings (6-9) of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) will kick off their week by traveling to Chicago for a match against the Chicago Soul (6-11) this Monday, January 21st at 2:30 p.m. (CST) in the Sears Center. This will be the second meeting between the Wings and the Soul this season. The Wings currently lead the series 1-0, earning an 18-10 win over the Soul on their home pitch earlier this season.

After last Friday's 19-10 loss to the Rochester Lancers at home, Wichita is looking to rebound with a second win over Chicago. In that match, the Wings were unable to overcome the seeminly unstoppable scoring power of the Lancers, including Mauricio Salles and Andy Tiedt who accounted for nine of the team's points on the night. The first half of the match was back and forth with goals from Salles and Doug Miller for the Lancers and Andrew Hoxie with two goals for the Wings to leave the score 5-4 in favor of Rochester at halftime. The Lancers took control in the second half, coming out with a pair of quick three-point goals by Even McNeley and Stephen Basso, leaving the Wings down 11-4. Tiguinho and Freddy Moojen would try to dig Wichita out of their deficit with three goals totaling six points in the second half, but would do no good as the Lancers would go on to score eight more points to hand the Wings their first home loss in four games.

Chicago struggled against Milwaukee, emerging winless in the doubleheader held on Friday and Saturday. In Friday's match, the Wave took a late lead to claim a 12-6 victory over the Soul. The first half of the match saw little action with neither club scoring in the first quarter, but a goal each from Chicago's Christian Meza and Milwaukee's Ian Bennett would leave them tied at two apiece by halftime. Then, the Soul went on a bit of a run, scoring two unanswered goals from Pablo and Aaron Nichols to give Chicago the lead, but were not able to hold on as the Wave went on to score five goals in the final quarter to win the match by six points. In the second match of the doubleheader the struggle was much of the same for the Soul as they were unable to stop the Wave attack. Jonathan Santos scored first for Milwaukee who from then on claimed the lead for the entire match. Carlos Farias and Carlos Munoz hit the only two goals of the night for the Soul, but it would not be enough to take the win as the Wave claimed a 9-5 victory.

Key Match-up: Freddy Moojen vs. Soul Defenders In Wichita's last match against Chicago, Freddy Moojen scored four goals, leading the Wings with 10 points to a 19-10 victory in the two clubs' first ever meeting. Since their match against the Wings, the Soul defense has only given up an average of 7.25 points, including an 11-0 shut-out against Syracuse. Freddy Moojen will need to lead the Wings' in a strong attack in order to have a chance at a second victory against the Soul.

Player to Watch: Geison This will be the first match Wings forward, Geison will play after serving a two game suspension for a red card accumulated in a match against Missouri earlier this month. In his absence, the Wings have struggled to produce and keep leads over their opponents, although they were able to claim a slim 12-11 win over the Comets. Look for Geison to add the spark needed to put the Wings back on track and stay in playoff contention.
