Wichita Wings News Release

Wichita, KS. - The Wichita Wings (6-8) of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) will welcome the Rochester Lancers (5-10) to Hartman Arena on Friday, January 18; Kick-off scheduled for 7:35 p.m. (CST). This will be the second meeting between Wichita and Rochester this season and the first in Hartman Arena. The match between these two clubs earlier this season saw the Lancers emerge victorious with a 10-6 win over the Wings.

The Wings are coming off a riveting 12-11 victory over rival club, the Missouri Comets, in a match that went down to the wire. The game began in a defensive battle with the lone goal in the first quarter coming from Leo Gibson, giving the Comets a 2-0 lead. The Wings offense opened in the second quarter with a string of goals by Kevin Ten Eyck, Miguel Ferrer, and Edvin Worley to award Wichita their first lead of the match. The Wings' momentum was halted when Gibson scored two more goals for the Comets, the first with just over two minutes left in the second quarter and the next just fifteen seconds into the third quarter. Adrian Gonzalez and Andre Berenzon highlighted the third quarter, each scoring their first goals of their Wings career. Wichita took a 10-9 lead into the fourth quarter with another defensive clash ensuing. Each team traded a goal in the final quarter as the Wings finished with a 12-11 win over the Comets. The win put Wichita back in playoff position, currently slotting them fourth in league standings.

The Lancers are on a six-game losing streak, with their last win dating back to December 15 when they took a 10-6 win over the Wings. Rochester makes their way to Wichita after their most recent defeat, a tough 15-14 loss to the Syracuse Silver Knights last Saturday on their home pitch. The match was a back and forth affair with both clubs combining a total of four lead changes and four different unanswered runs of at five points or more. After Neto scored, giving Syracuse a 2-0 lead, Mauricio Salles scored three straight goals for Rochester to provide the Lancers a 6-2 advantage halfway through the second quarter. From there on, the period belonged to the Silver Knights who scored four unanswered goals, allowing them a 10-6 lead over the Lancers at the half. Rochester responded in the third quarter with four unanswered goals of their own to take a 14-10 advantage. In the fourth quarter, Silver Knights defender, Nate Bourdeau, cut into the Lancers' lead with a goal, bringing the Silver Knights within two points just five minutes before the end of regulation. Marcos Chantel added to Syracuse's run by hitting a three-point goal to clinch a slim 15-14 victory over the Lancers.

Key Match-up:Wichita's Defense vs. Rochester's Forwards Rochester's Doug Miller and Mauricio Salles currently occupy two of the top three point leader's spots in the MISL. Salles contributed to the Lancers offense a great deal in their most recent match against Syracuse, finishing the game with four goals. Miller and Salles combined for seven of the 10 points produced in the Lancers' match against the Wings, earning them a win. Wichita's defense continued their outstanding play on Saturday by shutting out the MISL leader in points, Missouri forward Byron Alvarez. The Wings defense added focus on Alvarez, closing him off all night, ultimately leading to his ejection by way of accumulating three cards. In addition to scoring a goal each, Wichita defenders Kevin Ten Eyck and Victor Quiroz combined for seven blocks, moving both into the top five players in blocked shots in the league. The match-up between the Wings' defense and the Lancers forwards will decide the game's outcome this Friday.

Players to Watch: Freddy Moojen Wings' captain Freddy Moojen, continues to spearhead the attack for Wichita. Although Moojen ended the game against the Comets scoreless he produced several scoring opportunities, recording six shots and chipping in two assists. In Wichita's previous game against Rochester, Moojen led the Wings with two goals. Moojen looks to continue his excellent work rate and lead the Wings to victory this weekend.
