Wings Drop to Rochester
December 15, 2012 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Wichita Wings News Release
Wichita, KS- A strong effort by the Wichita Wings (2-6) on the road would not be enough to win them their third game of the season as they fell, 6-10, against the Rochester Lancers (5-4) Saturday afternoon in Blue Cross Arena. Although the Wings brought the game within two points from a score by Geison in the fourth quarter, it would not suffice to overcome the fight of the Lancers.
The game began with a contest between each team's defense, allowing neither the Wings nor Lancers to score immediately. Rochester established their rhythm about halfway through the quarter, when their leading scorer, Doug Miller, found the back of the net for the Lancer's first goal of the afternoon off the tail end of back-to-back restarts. The Wings struggled offensively to string together scoring opportunities, seemingly a step behind the Lancer's offense. Just before the first quarter expired, Rochester's Jeremy Ortiz, scored the second goal for the Lancers off a rebound save from Sanaldo to close the first quarter of play with Rochester up 4-0 over the Wings.
At the start of the second quarter, Sanaldo came up big; saving a bicycle kick that would have extended the Lancer's lead to six. The Wings responded with a stunning play that included Edvin Worley heading the ball off a cross from Geison to team captain, Freddy Moojen, who headed in the Wings first goal of the match, making the score 4-2. Wichita attempted to score the equalizer with a man advantage off a power play, but would not be able to convert. Rochester continued to pressure the Wings defense, allowing Sanaldo several saves during the quarter that would prevent the Lancers from scoring before the end of the first half.
The second half of play would prove to be a difficult test for the Wings on both sides of the ball. The Lancers found the net twice in the third quarter, with back-to-back goals from Salles off a restart and a side volley from Doug Miller for his second score of the night to extend their lead, 8-2. Freddy Moojen would attempt to dig the Wings out of their point deficit with a goal off an assist from Tiguinho to make the score 4-8, Lancers, one second before the end of the quarter.
Wichita forward, Geison, followed Moojen's goal in the fourth quarter with a two-point goal to help close in on Rochester's lead off an assist from defender, Victor Quiroz, to cut the Lancer lead to two, 6-8. Near the end of the game, Wichita was forced to play three men down due to a pair of penalties, which led to a Lancer score by Stephen Basso that would lock away a win for Rochester, final score 6-10.
Wichita will return home on December 21 for a rematch against their rival, the Missouri Comets, whom they dropped two games to at the start of the season. Kick-off is set for 7:35 p.m. in Hartman Arena. For tickets call 316.927.3999 or visit www.wichitawingsindoorsoccer.com and be sure to follow the team on Facebook and Twitter @wichita_wings.
