Wichita Wings News Release
Wichita, KS - The Wichita Wings' (7-17) road woes continued as they emerged winless in their match against the Syracuse Silver Knights (8-15); final score, 15-10. This is the first victory this season the Silver Knights are able to claim over the Wings in what turned out to be an aggressive battle to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Kevin Ten Eyck opened the first quarter by scoring the first goal in the match to give the Wings an early 2-0 lead. Neto, who led the Silver Knights with two goals on the night, hit his first to tie up the match at 2-2. Wichita's defenders led by Victor Quiroz came up with two incredible plays to prevent the Wings from falling behind early and were able to hold off Syracuse' momentum to leave the match tied at a goal apiece heading into the second quarter.
Kenardo Forbes kept Syracuse going with a goal just 11 seconds into the second quarter to allow the Silver Knights a 4-2 advantage. Syracuse continued to control the pace of the game, making it difficult for the Wings to develop scoring opportunities that they could convert on. Though Sanaldo produced some important saves, he could not stop Derek Popovich from striking another goal to leave the Wings down by four just partway through the second quarter. Wichita captain, Freddy Moojen broke the Silver Knights' run with a goal of his own off a restart assisted by Tiguinho to cut The Syracuse lead to two by halftime.
The third quarter proved to be a contest Wichita could not win as Syracuse continued to attack a tired Wings defense. Partway through the quarter, a fast break for the Silver Knights created a one-on-one shot for Forbes against Sanaldo, who saved it outside the box. The penalty gave Syracuse a shootout opportunity taken by Neto and as a result, a goal to extend the Silver Knights' lead. Andriy Budnyy contributed a goal from three-point range to give the Silver Knights a tremendous 11-4 advantage over the Wings. Tiguinho answered back for the Wings with a right footed strike for a two-point goal, but would be offset by a shot from Paripovich to again leave the Wings with a seven point deficit at the end of the third quarter.
With increasingly aggressive play, both clubs battled for points in the final quarter. Adrain Gonzalez finally ended the Silver Knights run with a goal in hopes of created much needed momentum on the Wings' end. Moojen continued the run by tapping in a goal in off a perfectly set assist from Tiguinho to leave the Silver Knights clinging to a three point lead with five minutes left in regulation. Then, with just 25 seconds left Nelson Santana would stifle any hope of a Wings comeback with a final goal to secure a 15-10 victory for the Silver Knights.
The Wings will continue their road test this Sunday afternoon, February 24 at 3:10 p.m. (CST) against the rival Missouri Comets. The match can be viewed on www.uslnation.com/misl.
