Wilkins Signs Contract to Play in Denmark

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Former Bellingham Slam guard Rico Wilkins has signed a contract to play in Denmark this winter, the team announced today, becoming the latest player from the organization to advance their basketball career overseas.
Wilkins has signed with the Vaerlose Basketball Club, a team which competes in Denmark's top basketball league.
The 5-foot-11 former Western Washington guard is coming off an excellent season with the Slam in 2014, where he averaged 14.1 points per game. Playing in all 18 games but starting just one, Wilkins was frequently one of Bellingham's first options off of the bench and picked up the USBasket.com Sixth Man of Year award for the International Basketball League. Scoring in double figures 13 times, Wilkins finished the 2014 championship season strong, scoring at least 24 points in three of his last four games.
Wilkins' season in Denmark will be his second opportunity to compete overseas.
He returned to Bellingham last spring for the 2014 IBL season after a stint with a team in Casablanca, Morocco.
Following his collegiate career at WWU, where he won a NCAA Division-II National Championship as a junior, Wilkins enjoyed an outstanding rookie season with the Slam in 2013. That year he played a pivotal role in helping Bellingham win its second of what would become three straight IBL titles, finishing as runner up for MVP honors after scoring a combined 51 points in two playoff games.
On the court in Denmark, Wilkins will be tasked with helping to reverse the fortunes of Vaerlose, which finished last in their league last season with a 5-22 record. His first game is slated for October 8.
In the past two weeks, former Slam players Austin Bragg and Michael Duty also signed contracts to play overseas with teams in Slovenia and Spain, respectively.
