Wildcats Trigger Avalanches' Fall

The Wichita Falls Wildcats left Alaska on a three game winning streak after sweeping the Alaska Avalanche and improving their overall record to 11-2-1. The Wildcats currently sit in first place in the NAHL South Division with twenty-three points.

Friday night was a hard fought battle between the two teams and the Wildcats came out on top 4-2. The Wildcats got on the board first less than five minutes into the game; Sponseller and Watchorn assisted Kenline who put the puck in the back of the net to get the scoring started. Before the period was over however, the Avalanche were able to score a powerplay goal to tie the game at 1 going into the first intermission. The Cats dominated the second frame scoring two goals and keeping the Alaska offense to only five shots on goal. The Wildcats second goal of the game came on the powerplay less than a minute into the second stanza. Morrell and Sponseller found Salazar who capitalized on his position and blasted the puck past the Avalanche goalie to once again give the Cats the lead. At the 13:51 mark, Skylur Jameson and Sean McKenzie made their way down the ice during another powerplay and McKenzie slid one into the net to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead after forty minutes of play. The final frame was evenly matched with each team taking eleven shots on goal, and both capitalizing on one. Alaska scored their second and final goal of the game at the 17:48 mark; less than a minute later, Sponseller would get his third assist of the game when he found Adam Krefski who found the back of the net once more for the Cats and sealed the win.

Saturday night the Wildcats came out strong scoring three goals in a little over five minutes, and eventually winning the game 4-1. Salazar scored the first goal less than thirty seconds into the game off the assist from Everett. At the 3:49 mark Javorek assisted Cardwell who put the puck into the back of the net and gave the Cats a 2-0 lead. Five minutes into the first period Salazar would connect with the puck again, scoring his second goal of the game. The goal came on a powerplay and the assists were from Cardwell and Morrell. After the third goal, the Avalanche changed goalies. The Wildcats were able to capitalize on one more opportunity before the first period ended. Cardwell assisted Everett at the 18:32 mark and the Cats took a 4-0 lead after only twenty minutes of play. The second stanza remained scoreless by both teams. It was a battle of the defenses as twenty-one shots were taken on goal between the two teams. Finally, at the 13:32 mark of the final frame Alaska scored a powerplay goal and the game would end in a 4-1 victory for the Cats.
