Wichita Falls Wildcats News Release
The Wildcats came out strong this weekend against the Springfield Jr Blues winning both games, and putting the Cats on a five game winning streak. The Wildcats were unstoppable Friday night as they came out and defeated the Jr Blues 6-1. Saturday night was a much closer game, but the Cats would not be defeated as they beat Springfield in the final seconds of overtime 2-1. The Wildcats picked up four points this weekend and currently sit in fourth place in the NAHL South Division, only five points behind Texas.
The Wildcats came out ready to play Friday night, taking an early lead and never looking back. Michal Hrtus would put the Cats on the board first only three minutes into the game, off an assist from Kyle Olson and Sean Nealon. This was only the beginning as the Cats would score three more goals before the period was over. At the 14:34 mark, Adam Cardwell would get the puck to Skylur Jameson who would slide the puck past the Springfield goalie to put the Cats up 2-0. Less than a minute later, the Cats would go on a powerplay and Captain Skylur Jameson would again capitalize on the situation scoring his second goal of the game. Before the frame was over, Michael Hrtus and Ricky Doriott would set-up Mike Schumacher who would put the puck in the back of the net to give the Cats the 4-0 lead going into the first intermission. Springfield would come out in the second stanza and score their lone goal of the game. The Cats would go on another powerplay at the 10:45 mark and Mike Schumacher would score his second goal of the game and put the Cats up 5-1 after forty minutes of play. The Wildcats weren't done yet though as Skylur Jameson would score again with six minutes left in the game, giving him his first hat trick of the season. Cal Heeter was on top of his game saving 24 of the Jr Blues 25 shots. The Wildcats took 52 shots on goal and proved to be more than the Jr Blues goalie could handle as they defeated Springfield 6-1.
Saturday night proved to be a change of pace from Friday's game with far less penalties and no goals being scored by either team in the first two periods. The Wildcats blasted the Jr Blues goal with twenty-four shots in the first forty minutes but were unable to capitalize until the third period when action started to pick up. 8:49 into the third frame, Kyle Mattson would get the puck to Luke Salazar who would take advantage of his position and slide the puck past the Jr Blues goalie to give the Cats the 1-0 lead. The Cats would hold the 1-0 lead until 2:28 left in the game, when Springfield was able to slide one past Heeter to tie the game. Regulation play would end in a 1-1 tie and the game would go into overtime. With only twenty-nine seconds left in overtime, Skylur Jameson would score an unassisted goal to give the Cats the 2-1 victory.
When asked about this weekends games, Coach Meisner said, "Our team defense really stepped up for us both games, and Heeter had a good weekend. Captain Skylur Jameson proved himself as a captain, and did a good job of leading the team. Also, it was Schumacher's first game back, and he contributed a lot, scoring two goals on Friday night."
