April 7, 2008 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Wichita Falls Wildcats News Release
The Wildcats traveled to Fairbanks this past weekend to kick off the first round of playoffs by taking on the Ice Dogs in two games at the Big Dipper Ice Arena. The two teams are facing off in the best of five series with the winning team going on to the next round to take on the winner of the Topeka and Texas series.
Friday night proved to be a disappointing loss for the Cats as they fell short 4-0. The Ice Dogs netted one goal each period, with their final goal of the game coming in the last few minutes on an empty net.
Saturday night the Wildcats hit the ice looking to redeem themselves and did just that. The Wildcats came out strong scoring only five minutes into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. The goal came on the powerplay when McKenzie and Everett found Detlefsen who blasted the puck into the back of the net. The Cats maintained that lead for the remainder of the first period. The Wildcats got on the board again only 4:27 into the second frame. Shaun Jameson and Henderson assisted Delaurell who put another one between the pipes for the Cats to give them a 2-0 lead. At the 10:36 mark, McKenzie and Shkreli worked the puck to Sponseller who slid the puck past the Ice Dogs goalie to put the Cats up by three. It was McKenzie's second assist of the game. Fairbanks answered back quickly at the 11:26 mark but it was their lone goal of the game. The third period remained scoreless by both teams and the Cats skated away with the 3-1 victory.
