Wildcats Catch Terrell Owens
April 16, 2002 - United States Basketball League (USBL) News Release
MILFORD, CT - The United States Basketball League, Inc. (USBL) announced today that the Adirondack Wildcats have secured the services of San Francisco 49er All-Pro Wide Receiver Terrell Owens for the upcoming 2002 USBL season. Owens plans on joining the Wildcats on or around May 3 following the 49ers mini-camp. Owens, who is under contract with the 49ers through the 2006 NFL season, plans to donate the majority of his 2002 USBL salary to local charities.
"We are thrilled to have Owens," said Adirondack Wildcat GM Mike Sweet. "Owens is a world class athlete that played basketball as well as football in college. He is a proven winner that we hope will lead us to a USBL Championship this year."
Owens, a two-time Pro-Bowl performer with San Francisco, played three years of college basketball at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1993-1996 and was a member of the Mocs' NCAA Tournament teams in 1994 and 1995.
Owens has caught over 60 passes in each of the last five seasons with the 49ers. He finished with 93 receptions for 1,412 yards last season, which placed him third in the NFL in receiving yards and 10th in receptions.
"We're glad to have Terrell Owens in the USBL, "states USBL Founder and Commissioner Daniel T. Meisenheimer III. It shows once again that the USBL is truly 'The League of Opportunity.' Owens will be a great asset to the League as well as to Mike Sweet, the Adirondack Wildcats and the many fans of the USBL."
