Wichita Falls Wildcats News Release
TOPEKA, Kans. - The Wichita Falls Wildcats were bested by the Topeka RoadRunners, 7-2, at the Landon Arena on Sunday night, as Topeka completed the weekend sweep.
Erich Jaeger and Max Reisinger scored in the loss for Wichita Falls, while Jake Townsend and Johnny Lazarus both had assists. Austin Shaw made 35 saves in the losing effort.
Topeka opened up a two-goal lead late in the first period on a pair of goals from Dominic Lutz. First, Lutz swept home a loose puck from the top of the crease after a two-on-one resulted in a rebound and net-front collisions. Minutes later, he grabbed his second of the net after dispossessing a Wildcats skater in the 'Runners' offensive zone, beating Shaw upstairs from in close to make it 2-0.
The RoadRunners expanded their edge 15 seconds into the second period, as Jasen Fernsler deflected a slapshot from the point to make it 3-0 on the power play tally.
Topeka had another opportunity to expand its lead when a penalty shot was awarded to the 'Runners after Paul Soubry covered the puck in the crease, but Shaw stood strong to make a blocker save on Lutz to keep the score 3-0.
The 'Cats mounted pressure as the second stanza ticked towards the end, with Lazarus and Colin Staub creating scoring chances for themselves, but they could not beat Matej Tomek as the period ended with Topeka leading by three.
Wichita Falls pulled one back early in the third period, as Jaeger snuck a shot through Tomek's five-hole to make it 3-1, but the 'Runners responded with three goals in the next four minutes to stretch the score to 6-1, with Lutz, Fernsler and Will Scherer finding the net for Topeka.
After Reisinger picked up a consolation goal at the 14:40 mark of the third, Fernsler would score his third power-play goal of the night to complete the scoring at 7-2.
The Wildcats return to the ice when they travel to Amarillo to take on the Bulls on Dec. 31. Fans that cannot make it to the game can follow all the action on FASTHockey.com, with an audio-only broadcast available on YouTube.
