Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, announced they signed RHP Justin Staatz to a 2007 contract on Wednesday.

Staatz, a native of Woodstock, VA, was signed last season as a non-drafted free agent by the Minnesota Twins following a standout career at Mount Olive (NC) College. He was assigned to the Gulf Coast Twins where he sported a 2-0 record with a 3.09 ERA while striking out 20 batters and walking only three and surrendering eight hits in 12 innings of work. He was promoted to Elizabethton of the Appalachian League where he also went 2-0 with 17 strikeouts in 22 innings of work. Combined between the two stops Staatz went 4-0 with a 3.78 ERA in 22 games over 33 innings with 37 strikeouts, 13 walks, and 33 hits allowed.

Over two seasons at Mount Olive College, Staatz was named to the CVAC All-Conference team and an ABCA All-South Atlantic Region 2nd team selection in 2005 and 2006. In 2005 he posted a record of 7-5 with a 2.30 ERA while striking out 85 batters in 78 innings. During his senior season in 2006, he went 8-5 with a 2.71 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 85 innings pitched. He was named to the NCCISA 2006 All-State Baseball Team, and a three time CVAC Pitcher of the Week.

"Based on the success Justin has had in Pro ball and college, we see him as someone who will come in and compete for a spot in our starting rotation," said Wild Things General Manager Ross Vecchio. "The reports we've received on him are very encouraging, and we are anxious to see him this spring."

The Wild Things will play open their sixth season in the Frontier League in May of 2007. The team has advanced to post-season action an unprecedented five consecutive years. The team is currently accepting deposits for 2007 season ticket packages at the box office. The team will host an open house at the ballpark on April 21st when individual game tickets will go on sale. For information, call 724-250-9555.
