Wichita Wings News Release
Wichita, KS. - The Wichita Wings (7-14) of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) will travel to Baltimore on Saturday, February 16, to take on the Baltimore Blast (19-5); Kick-off scheduled for 6:35 p.m. (CST) in 1st Mariner Arena. After enduring a tough loss to Baltimore last Friday night in a game that featured a difficult fourth quarter for the Wings as they gave up the lead for a Blast victory, Wichita will try again, squaring off against the Blast in the first of a five game road trip to finish the season. The second match of the road game will take place in Rochester against the Lancers (8-15) on Monday, February 18 at 6:00 p.m. (CST).
In their last match against Rochester, Wichita produced an important 14-11 victory as a result of a push late in the fourth quarter led by Andrew Hoxie. The first half of play was all Wings with contributions early from Hoxie and Adrian Gonzalez to give Wichita a 4-2 lead. Pedro Franco and Mauricio Salles came up big for the Lancers in the first half with a two and three-point goal respectively to take a 5-4 lead over the Wings. However, the Wings would regain the lead courtesy of goals from Hoxie and Miguel Ferrer to hold an 8-5 advantage over the Lancers heading into halftime. The Wings were held scoreless in the third quarter as the Lancers came prepared in their comeback efforts with goals from Brayton Knapp and Evan McNeley to reclaim the lead. Doug Miller would attempt to keep the run alive in the final quarter for Rochester, but Wichita's Kareem Yearwood, Hoxie, and Alex Moseley would combine for six points late to steal the victory.
Following their loss to the Wings, the Lancers traveled to Milwaukee to take on the first placed Wave two days later, resulting in a 14-11 defeat and leaving Rochester winless on the ride home. The Wave scored early with back-to-back goals from Sesay and Giuliano Oliviero to take a 4-0 lead which was cut in half by a strike from Mauricio Salles. Luan Oliveria and Nick Perera would hit two more goals to extend the Wave lead before Salles hit his second goal of the night. Sesay followed with his second goal for the Wave to leave the score 10-4 Wave in the first half. Similar to their match against Wichita, the Lancers rallied in the third quarter with five consecutive points from Pedrinho and Paul Craig to leave Milwaukee clinging to a 10-9 lead. Perera and Ian Bennett would help the Wave pull away in the fourth quarter for a three-point victory.
Key match-ups - Wings defense vs. Maurico Salles Mauricio Salles has always been difficult for Wichita to defend. In the last two matches against Wichita, he has contributed a total of nine points for the Lancers. If Wichita wants to steal a win on the road, they will need to find a way to shut down Salles.
Player to Watch: Andrew Hoxie Andrew Hoxie has been crucial in the Wings' last two matches against the Lancers. He combined for 10 points in Wichita's and Rochester's last two meetings, most lately a hat trick which led the Wings to a 14-11 victory at home. Hoxie will need to continue his strong play if the Wings have any chance of prevailing on Rochester's home pitch.
