Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

VANCOUVER (Thursday, April 11, 2002) - The Vancouver Whitecaps have added strength to their central defence with the addition of former Canadian Olympic Team and Simon Fraser University star Kevan Cameron (pronounced ke-VON) of Edmonton, Alberta.

As well, the Whitecaps have announced the re-signing of veteran defender-midfielder Nico Berg of North Vancouver, who returns for his eighth season of play with the club.

23-year-old Kevan Cameron will be looked upon to help fill the void at central defence left by the departure of Rick Titus (with Colorado Rapids of MLS) and Steve McCauley (taking a year off). Like Titus, Cameron is a superb natural athlete and a fierce competitor.

Cameron was Vancouver's top selection in the 2001 A-League Draft, taken in the Territorial Protection Round. He opted instead to sign with the Montreal Impact, but missed all of last season following surgery to remove floating cartilage in his right knee. He is a former member of the Canadian Olympic Team, with 5 caps, as well as the national U-20 squad.

Cameron was a defensive stalwart and team leader for Simon Fraser University for four seasons (1997-2000), where he was twice named an NAIA Third Team All-American. In his senior year, he was chosen as Clan co-captain, along with recent Whitecaps signing Andrew Veer. Cameron has also played for the Vancouver Explorers of the Pacific Coast League and Burnaby Canadians and Clan Alumni of the Vancouver Metro League. Kevan Cameron (6' 175 lb; 183 cm 80 kg) was born February 1, 1979 in Sherwood Park, Alberta.

28-year-old veteran Nico Berg has played over 100 games for the club dating back to 1992. His totals would be higher had he not missed a large part of last season after suffering an ankle injury June 29 in Portland. He also missed all of the 2000 season and most of 1998 while living abroad in Australia and Europe respectively. A former Canadian Olympic Team player with 6 caps, Berg was also a star midfielder with the UBC Thunderbirds. He played for Vancouver's reserve team in 1992 and saw action in one game for the first team that year after a brief stint with the London Lasers of the Canadian Soccer League. Nico Berg (5' 11" 170 lb; 180 cm 77 kg) was born September 11, 1973, in North Vancouver, BC.
