Vancouver Whitecaps News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps men (7-4-3) look to close the gap on USL First Division leaders Charleston Battery (9-4-3) when they host the South Carolina club at Swangard Stadium on Wednesday evening.
After enjoying five-day break from action last week, Teitur Thordarson's side now gear up for another busy spell of league games, with Vancouver playing the first of six USL-1 matches in the space of two weeks on Wednesday. The Whitecaps are also keen to return to winning ways after a run of two draws and two defeats in their last four league contests, with their last USL-1 victory coming on June 7 at Swangard when Vancouver defeated Pacific Northwest rivals Portland Timbers 3-1.
After the recent distractions of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, the Whitecaps will look to complete the first half of the 2008 league campaign in positive fashion by taking three more valuable points off of Mike Anhaeuser's side. On May 28, the Whitecaps handed the Battery their first home defeat of the year, as a Jason Jordan strike and a first-ever USL-1 goal for Nicholas Addlery gave Vancouver their first win at Charleston's Blackbaud Stadium in club history.
The Whitecaps currently lead the all-time set of results against Charleston, with Vancouver registering four wins, two defeats, and two draws to date. Vancouver are also undefeated against the Battery at home, with the Whitecaps recording three wins and a draw all-time against Charleston at Swangard. Their latest home win came last season, as Jeff Clarke scored a second-half winner in a 1-0 victory over the Battery on August 25.
