Overview:
The Whitecaps Women got back to their winning ways with a 2-1 victory on the road against the much-improved Arizona Heatwave. The Caps welcomed back several National Team players, with seven getting the start. Andrea Neil scored the eventual winner early in the second half after Kara Lang had opened the scoring with a free kick after twenty minutes.
Although the hosts officially out-shot Vancouver 22-17, it was the Whitecaps who had the better chances, with the Heatwaves keeper Jennifer Branam making several outstanding saves.
The Whitecaps record improves to 3-1-0 for 9 points, as they leapfrog Arizona and the Denver Lady Cougars, to move into a first place tie in the W-League's Western Conference standings, along with the Mile High Mustangs, who are also 3-1-0. Arizona drop to 2-2-1, for fourth place.
The Whitecaps conclude their two-game road trip Sunday, in San Diego, against the winless Gauchos Women. The Caps then return home to play the Denver Lady Cougars on Saturday June 11 at Swangard.
Scoring Summary
20' Vanc Kara Lang
Lang scores her first of the season with a powerful free kick from over 30 yards out.
48' Vanc Andrea Neil (Katie Thorlakson)
Lang plays it to Thorlakson whose cross finds Neil, and the captain fires in a crisp shot from 14 yards for her first of the season.
72' Ariz Julie Williford (Elizabeth Bogus)
Bogus was given too much space in midfield and fed a nice through ball to Williford who scored with a good low shot to the far side.
Game Notes:
Recently re-signed 2004 W-League Defender of the Year Sasha Andrews got the start for her first game of the season.
Midfielder Amy Apps came in at half-time for her first action of the season after being sidelined by injury.
The Whitecaps fielded seven players recently back from a Canadian National Team tour of Scandinavia: Sasha Andrews, Randee Hermus, Andrea Neil, Amber Allen, Kara Lang, Brittany Timko, and Katie Thorlakson. The players were still significantly fatigued from their heavy schedule of travelling and playing.
The Whitecaps were without three players away with the Canadian U-17 Team competing at the Adidas Cup in Houston: defender Emily Zurrer, and forwards Jodi-Ann Robinson and Sydney Leroux.
Arizona's only two losses this season have come against Vancouver.
The Heatwave recently returned from a tour of Mexico, where they swept the opposition, posting wins of 4-2 and 3-0 over the Mexican National Team and a 9-0 win over a state champion university side.
