FC Tucson News Release
FC Tucson announced on Monday the return of goalkeeper Carlos Merancio.
"I'm so excited to be back in Tucson because it's the best club I've ever been part of," Merancio said. "I feel like it's my home."
Merancio is a native of Hermosillo, Mexico, and now resides in Tucson. He first signed with the club ahead of the inaugural USL League One season in 2019. He spent two seasons in Tucson playing 1,980 minutes over 22 games.
He made 41 saves in 13 games in 2019. In 2020, he made 25 saves in nine matches and had a .69 Goals Against Average.
"He's a top talent for me and somebody I really wanted to bring back to Tucson," said head coach Jon Pearlman. "He's a Tucson guy and I think he's going to be a real asset to us moving forward as we build one of the strongest defenses in League One."
FC Tucson previously announced it had picked up the option on six players from the 2021 playoff team, including center backs Kaelon Fox and Luca Mastrantonio.
The 23-year-old Merancio is a Mexico international and started his club career in 2017 with Monarcas Morelia Premier in Mexico's third division.
He spent the 2021 season with Hartford Athletic of the USL Championship.
"We're going to work very hard to make it to the playoffs again and win the championship," Merancio said.
