Week Seven USL Pro Teams of the Week announced

June 5, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release

TAMPA, FL - United Soccer Leagues announced Tuesday its USL First and Second Division Teams of the Week for the seventh week of the season, honoring Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar of Portland and Harrisburg's David McClellan as the USL First and Second Division Players of the Week, respectively.

The Portland Timbers have rebounded from a 1-4-1 start to move to second in the USL First Division table, picking up four points against rival Seattle with Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar leading the charge in a 3-1 decision on the second leg of the series with a goal and assist.

Within a minute of a 1-1 Seattle equalizer, Portland responded with a strike from Mubarike Chisoni in the 33rd minute. Alcaraz-Cuellar sent a ball across the Seattle penalty area, where Chisoni was waiting to bury the ball from 15 yards and put the Timbers up 2-1.

The Timbers closed the scoring in the 87th minute when Alcaraz-Cuellar sent a pass from near midfield to the right side where a streaking Byron Alvarez took the ball in-stride. Alvarez sailed a cross back to an on-rushing Alcaraz-Cuellar, who used his momentum to knock a header straight into the back of the net for the 3-1 win.

David McClellan, a rookie out of Messiah College, registered a goal and an assist in leading the Harrisburg City Islanders to their first win of the season a disappointing six games in after reaching the semifinals a year by blanking visiting Long Island 3-0.

McClellan bagged his second goal of the year in the 17th minute. Sumed Ibrahim surged forward on the dribble before neatly slipping the ball through Long Island's backline to McClellan, who corralled it near the top of the penalty area before chipping with his left foot over losing goalkeeper Michael Behonick.

Behonick was tested in the 35th minute and pushed a Derek Potteiger header wide, but he could do little to prevent Harrisburg's third score at the 37-minute mark. Sumed worked the ball loose from a Long Island defender on the right side of the box and sent it to the middle for McClellan. McClellan turned and laid the ball off for a rushing Jamel Mitchell, and the veteran USL scorer hammered a left-footed shot over Behonick for his third goal of the year and a 3-0 lead.
