Week One XFL Power Rankings

by Fran Stuchbury
February 22, 2023 - XFL (XFL)

Week one of the XFL season is in the books with three home teams exiting the weekend with victories. The Arlington Renegades outlasted the Vegas Vipers, 22-20; the Houston Roughnecks raced by the Orlando Guardians, 33-12; and the D.C. Defenders held off the Seattle Sea Dragons, 22-18. The San Antonio Brahmas became the only home squad to falter, succumbing 18-15 to an amazing, come-from-behind rally by the St. Louis Battlehawks.

Week two features St. Louis traveling to Seattle Thursday, D.C. visiting Vegas Saturday, San Antonio at Orlando Sunday afternoon and Arlington making the short trek to Houston Sunday evening.

The Power Rankings after week one:

1. Houston Roughnecks 1-0

The Roughnecks played the most complete game of any XFL team on both offense and defense in their victory over the Guardians. They may have an edge with three straight games at home to start the season.

2. St. Louis Battlehawks 1-0

Down 15-3 late in the fourth quarter, the Battlehawks offense came to life and rallied to an 18-15 victory over the Brahmas. A.J. McCarron won several big games when he played at Alabama, so maybe it isn't a surprise he did it again with St. Louis. WR Austin Proehl contributed two huge catches late, including the winner.

3. D.C. Defenders 1-0

It came as no surprise that a defense coached by Greg Williams produced big plays, creating three turnovers including two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and a key fumble recovery late in the game to defeat the Sea Dragons. The D.C. offense has to get in a better rhythm against Las Vegas this week.

4. Arlington Renegades 1-0

The offense did not score any touchdowns, but the Renegades capitalized with a pair of defensive scores that won the game against the Vipers. Arlington may emphasize the run game much more this week to set up play action passes.

5. Seattle Sea Dragons 0-1

The Sea Dragons offense has the potential to be explosive if it can limit turnovers. They were the only XFL team to attempt three-point conversions after both touchdowns they scored, connecting on one of them.

6. San Antonio Brahmas 0-1

The Brahmas finished with 207 passing yards and 133 rushing yards against the Battlehawks, but their defense was unable to makes stops late in the fourth quarter resulting in a heartbreaking defeat.

7. Vegas Vipers 0-1

The Vipers offense gave away the game with two Luis Perez interceptions returned for touchdowns in their loss at Arlington. If Perez struggles, quarterback Brett Hundley, a late signing in training camp, will get an opportunity to play.

8. Orlando Guardians 0-1

Whoever plays at quarterback this week will hope for better protection. The Guardians gave up seven sacks in their loss to the Roughnecks.
