Tampa Bay Storm News Release

Tampa - The first week of the 2008 training camp ended today for the Tampa Bay Storm with and inter-squad scrimmage at Skyway Park this morning. The team will have Sunday off before returning for the second week of training camp Monday morning.

The scrimmage set up to have the first team offense and defense square off before moving to first team offense against second team defense, then second team offense versus first team defense and finally second team offense against the second team defense. The team went through 68 plays during the scrimmage, 56 pass plays, 11 runs plays and one muffed snap.

"We still have some work to do," said head coach and general manager Tim Marcum. "The defense stepped up and did a solid job today. They had several stops and that is what we look for."

Highlighted with three interceptions, by Jeroid Johnson, Byron Jones and Khalid Naziruddin, the defense made several big stops. "I liked the way the defense played," added Marcum. "There were several big pops and big hits." One of those players flying around was Jack linebacker Nyle Wiren.

Wiren took advantage of the new schemes implemented by the coaching staff to take advantage of the rule change that now allows the Jack linebacker to move horizontally once the ball is snapped. "Nyle did a good job of moving around, flying to the ball," remarked Marcum. "He was moving well, knocking people around."

The offense was slowed down as two key receivers, Terrill Shaw and Sedrick Robinson, continued to work with the trainers on the sideline. The offense certainly missed Shaw and Robinson "the most important thing is to have them ready for Kansas City" remarked quarterback Brett Dietz. "We'll continue to work on the little things, the details, as we prepare for Week One."

Offensively, highlights included two redzone touchdown rushes by Torrance Marshall, a touchdown pass form Marshall to Lawrence Samuels, touchdown passes from Dietz to Hank Edwards and David Saunders and Case to Tyrone Timmons and Jovon Russell. On the offensive line Randy Hand, Kenyatta Jones and Geir Gudmundsen saw snaps on the first unit with Tom Kaleita and Marcus Owen.

As the team enters the second week of training camp and players battle for positions the key is to keep working and focus on being prepared for the season opener against Kansa City. "This is a growing process," said Samuels. "We are mixing in new guys to new roles but we are on the right track."
