Week one attendance sets four records

NEW YORK – Attendance for the first week of the 2004 AFL season was up nine percent vs. the first week of the 2003 season, and up 25 percent vs. the 2003 season average.

The nine Week 1 games averaged 14,242 fans per game, up nine percent from 13,064 in Week 1 in 2003. Week 1's average attendance is up 25 percent vs. the 2003 season-average attendance of 11,397. Last season's average attendance was up 14.4 percent vs. 2002 (9,957). Following is an attendance comparison:

Week 1 of 2004 broke four AFL attendance records – highest Week 1 total, highest Week 1 average, highest total for any week, and highest average for any week.

Other Week 1 highlights include sellouts in Colorado (18,063), Georgia (11,200) and Philadelphia (17,484). Also, Indiana set a franchise attendance record with 14,007 fans Saturday night, the most in their 15-year history. By comparison, the AFL had two sellouts Week 1 in 2003 and only two for the entire 2002 season.
