Week 2 Too Early For Big Game?
Published on April 24, 2009 under Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) News Release
It's the second week of the regular season. Heck, it's the second week in the history of the Southern Indoor Football League. Does that mean it's too early for a BIG game?
You can vote using the interactive poll on the homepage, but the coaches of the two teams who won last week have different opinions.
The Acadania Mudbugs host the Texas Pirates in the first meeting of unbeaten SIFL teams. Okay, they're both 1-0, but you get idea.
It's the Mudbugs home opener, but is it any bigger than that? Veteran coach John Fourcade doesn't think so.
``It's WAY too early,'' Fourcade said. ``We're still trying to find ourselves as a team and I think what you'll see Saturday is two teams still feeling themselves out.''
Pirates coach Leon Thomassen, who picked up his first coaching victory last week, is taking the ``every game is a big game' 'approach.
``We just don't know how good of a football team we are and every game is an opportunity to find ourselves,'' Thomassen said. ``It's also our first road game and you have to get the victories when you can.''
Thomassen concedes that Fourcade is the more experienced coach, but plays that aspect down.
``I've always believed that players win games and coaches help you lose,'' Thomassen said. ``I'm confident in my players.''
This weekend features a full tilt of action. In addition to the Texas-Acadiana, the Louisiana Swashbucklers host the PASM Florida Kings on Saturday in the opener for both teams. The Austin Turfcats (0-1) and Houma Conquerors (0-1) play Sunday.
