Week 17: Friday Night Matchups

July 18, 2008 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

MANCHESTER WOLVES (7-7) AT ALBANY CONQUEST(5-9)

FRIDAY, JULY 17, 2008 - Times Union Center (13,901) 7:00 P.M. ET

Week 17 kicks off Friday night with a match between two teams who are quite familiar with each other, the Manchester Wolves and the Albany Conquest. The Wolves will be traveling to New York to play at the Times Union Center. This will be the twenty-first time these two teams have met. Manchester won the most recent meeting 50-33 in Week 14. The Wolves defense is what stopped Albany QB DAN COLE (21-of-41 for 222 yards), and kept top WR ANTWUN WILLIAMS to just 6 catches for 89 yards and one touchdown. Manchester's most recent result was a 53-27 home victory against the Mahoning Valley Thunder. Manchester dominated the entire game, completely silencing the Thunder. QB JAMES PINKNEY gave an outstanding performance. He started the first quarter throwing a spot on 6-for-6 and continued this domination throughout the match, ending with 24-of-31, six touchdowns and winning the Schutt Offensive Player of the Game award. Combined with the receiving by STEVEN SAVOY (11-106-2) and newcomer KEITH STOKES (2 TDs), the Manchester offense put on quite the show last Saturday. BRADLEY CHAVEZ still leads the Wolves in receiving overall with 80 catches for 1031 yards and 24 touchdowns. The Wolves defense also showed the Thunder no mercy, never letting QB SHANE ADLER get settled. The Conquest were also victorious this past weekend, defeating the Louisville Fire 41-35. Thanks to the early advantage set up by the defense, Cole (14-of-19 for 129 yards) threw three touchdown passes in the first half and ran one in himself before his injury on the first possession of the second half. Rookie QB JOE DELUISE came in and gave it his all, running the ball 22 yards to the goal line, but got called short just inside the one-yard line. In the last seconds of the game, DeLuise pulled through again and scored on a 12-yard touchdown run, giving Albany the win. DeLuise finished the game with 8-of-10 for 64 yards and one touchdown and gave the Conquest a new season-high for rushing going ten times for 47 yards and one touchdown. WR CHRIS BOCAGE led the receivers with the game-high of nine catches for 62 yards and one touchdown, but Williams still leads the Conquest in receiving overall with 88 catches for 1123 yards and 29 touchdowns. Manchester enters this week's match with the No. 16 ranking overall in the af2 league's Coaches Poll while the Conquest finds themselves left out. As it usually is with these two rivals, this game most likely will come down to which team's defense can step up and keep the offense at bay.

LOUISVILLE FIRE (7-7) AT GREEN BAY BLIZZARD (9-5)

FRIDAY, JULY 17, 2008 - The Resch Center (7, 695) 8:30 P.M. ET

The Louisville Fire head to Wisconsin this week to take on the Green Bay Blizzard. The two clubs have met several times in the past and both have won their fair share of matches, however right now the Blizzard lead the series 6-5. When they last crossed paths, Green Bay came away with the 34-31 victory. The Blizzard have lost the last two games in a row, with the most recent result being a 55-54 loss in overtime to the Lexington Horsemen in Week 16. This is the second time that Green Bay has lost to Lexington this season. Green Bay had the lead at the half after scoring four times in the second quarter. ROBERT GARTH threw one touchdown pass and QB COLLIN DRAFTS had two, combined with a fumble recovery that OLAWALE KWAKU ran in for a score. In the second half Lexington came roaring back, pushing the game into overtime and eventually winning on a two-point conversion. Drafts threw 17-of-30 for 221 yards and three touchdowns and leads the club in passing overall. WR/DB ANTHONY CRISSINGER-HILL scored twice and had 7 catches for 128 yards. RUSTY MIDLAM put on a great performance at defense with 11 solo tackles, one interception, and one pass breakup. Last week, the Fire were lacking some heat and lost to the Albany Conquest 35-41. QB DANNY SOUTHWICK tied the game twice in the first quarter with two touchdown passes, one to WR LONNELL DEWALT and the other to WR RICARDO LENHART. Southwick ended with 17-for-27 passing and three touchdowns, while Dewalt had the game-high of 112 yards and three touchdowns with seven catches. Louisville's defense stepped up to match the offense in the second quarter when DB MATT FORBES intercepted a pass by Conquest QB DAN COLE in the end zone. This was Forbes fourteenth interception of the season. DE ZACHARIAH BABINGTON-JOHNSON also played an important role for the defense with four sacks and four solo tackles, making him the ADT Defensive Player of the Game. After a scoreless third quarter, K DANNY KIGHT drove in a 33-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter to cut Albany's lead to 26-21. When QB AARON MARSHALL stepped in for Southwick, he acted quickly in the last quarter. He connected with Dewalt on a 31-yard Hail Mary pass and then again for the two-point conversion, which tied the game with 25 seconds to go. Marshall finished the game 6-for-12 passing with 94 yards and one touchdown. The Fire lost in the end after Conquest QB JOE DELUISE surprised everyone with a 12-yard touchdown run. This week, Louisville and Green Bay enter the match ranked No. 14 and No. 6 in the af2 league's Coaches Poll, respectively. Whichever team does not pick up the intensity will find themselves with their third loss in a row.
