Week 10 NIFL Preview

May 12, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL) News Release

Conference match-ups and some possible redemption kick-off the second half of NIFL 2006....here's the rundown on Week Ten in the National Indoor Football League...............

The Billings (6-1) team has the second best record in the Pacific Conference and will square up with Rapid City for top honors on May 27 th, but first is a date this Friday night with the Wyoming Cavalry (4-3) at the Casper Events Center. Both teams come off bye weeks and won their most recent games. Both are offensive powers, with Billings ranked third in NIFL Scoring Offense, and Wyoming sixth. Billings relies on the Chris Dixon to Robert Reed pass combination to put points on the board, while Wyoming counters with Frank Borba to Cory Grow and Jason Quinn. It's a 7pm Kick-Off.

The Charleston Sandsharks (3-3) have proven to be one of the better expansion teams in the NIFL this season. Coach John Patterson's team is coming off a bye week and will travel to meet the Dayton Bulldogs (2-4) on Friday night at the Bulldog's new facility, Wall 2 Wall Soccer. The Bulldogs have the NIFL top passer in quarterback Antonio Davis and the second leading receiver in Anthony Tyus. The Atlantic Conference game gets underway at 7pm.

Indoor pro football is alive and thriving in Montgomery, and new Montgomery Maulers (2-5) Co-Owner and Head Coach Michael Mink has his team coming off a hard fought win over Greensboro last weekend. The Maulers will get another chance to get home fans excited when the team hooks up with the visiting Beaumont Drillers (4-3) Saturday night at the Garrett Coliseum. The Drillers are no strangers to the road, playing their fourth game in as many weeks away from home. Beaumont lost to the RiverCity Rage in St. Louis last week, and fell two games behind the Katy Copperheads in the Pacific Conference South division race. It's a 7pm Kick-Off.

It's been half a season in coming, but one NIFL team will finally get a win under it's belt when the Lincoln Capitols (0-7) travel north to face the winless Big Sky Thunder (0-7) in a 7:05pm Saturday night game at the Valley Ice Garden. Relocation to St. Joseph, Missouri has played into the struggles of the Lincoln team, led by Scott Johnson, who doubles as a wide receiver and linebacker. The Thunder was hurt by fumbles and interceptions last week in the lopsided loss to Tri-Cities, and Head Coach Eric Sellers looks to turn the team around in the second half of 2006.

And the Twin City Gators (0-7) will be looking for the team's first NIFL win on Saturday night when the Arkansas Stars (2-5) play host at the Randal Tyson Track Center in a 7pm Kick-Off. This is the second meeting between the two Pacific South teams, with the Stars winning in week seven by the score of 53-35. Arkansas continues to rely on a rushing game headed up by former Razorbacks star Chrys Chukwuma, averaging 63 yards per game. He's scored 9 TD's in 2006. The Gators are headed up by safety Levi Payne, who leads the team in tackles.

The Cincinnati Marshals (4-3) got over the .500 mark on the year with a victory last weekend, and now head to the Crown Coliseum for a 7pm game Saturday night with the Fayetteville Guard (6-1). Both Atlantic Conference teams look to keep pace with the RiverCity Rage. The Marshals can pick up a half game on the Atlantic North leading Rage with a win this weekend, while the Guard will be looking to match the Rage as one of only two teams in the division with just one loss in 2006. Fayetteville will look for another great game from NIFL Offensive Player of the Week (9) Wilmont Perry, who won the honors last week with 124 yards and 6 TD's in his team's victory over Arkansas.

Victory would also be sweet this weekend for the winless Palm Beach Phantoms (0-4), but standing in the way of the expansion team's first win is the Osceola (6-2) team, led by fullback Mike Stephenson and coming off a huge win two weeks ago over the Montgomery Maulers. The Atlantic South division game will kick-off Saturday night at 7pm at the Silver Spurs Arena. Both teams had bye weeks last weekend.

The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center may need to add a scoreboard on Sunday afternoon, when the host Rapid City Flying Aces (7-0) hook up with the Tri-Cities Fever (5-2) in a 3:05pm contest. The Flying Aces live up to their name, still leading the entire NIFL in Scoring Offense, while the Fever set a franchise record by piling up 102 points last weekend against the Big Sky Thunder. The Aces lit up the boards for 82 points in a big win last weekend over the Lincoln Capitols. Tri-Cities Fever kicker Jesus Solis was named the NIFL Special Teams Player of the Week for his 13 P-A-T's and a 42 yard field goal in the win over Big Sky.

And the action rounds out with a Monday night contest at the Seminole Hard Rock Café when it's rematch time for the undefeated Lakeland Thunderbolts (7-0) and the host Florida Frenzy (1-4) in a Pacific South division game slated for 7pm Kick-Off. The Frenzy come off a tough, two point loss to Charleston at home two weeks ago while the Thunderbolts, led by running back Perry Tisdale and quarterback Jason Johnson, piled up 88 points in a win last week over the Twin City Gators. Lakeland defeated the Frenzy 61-20 earlier in the season.
