Wave Move into Top Spot

January 14, 2013 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) News Release

MILWAUKEE  - Josh Rife's overtime goal gave the Milwaukee Wave a 10-8 victory against the Baltimore Blast in front of a crowd of 5,543 on Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Arena, extending the Wave's winning streak to 10 games and putting them at the top of the MISL standings for the first time this season.

On the power play to start the overtime session after Adriano Dos Santos had been sent to the penalty box with 1:16 to play, Rife was able to tap home from close range just before the expiration of the man-advantage, giving his side victory. Baltimore had tied the game with a power play goal of its own with 2:22 to play, Tony Donatelli scoring his second goal of the game to make it 8-8 and send the game to overtime.

Baltimore had taken a 4-0 first-quarter lead in a defensive opening 15 minutes, Donatelli and Machel Millwood scoring just more than a minute apart from each other. The Wave were able to get back on even terms in the second quarter, however, as Fabinho and Ian Bennett each scored from close range midway through the period.

Bennett then scored his second goal of the game 3:46 into the third quarter to give the Wave their first lead of the game, only for Lucas Roque to redirect Lucio Gonzaga's shot to tie the game up less than two minutes later. The Wave re-took the lead midway through the fourth quarter, Tenzin Rampa finishing off a fine pass by Marcio Leite, before Donatelli's late power play sent the game to overtime. Rife had been in the penalty box at the time of Baltimore's equalizer, but redeemed himself with the game-winning goal as the Wave move a half game ahead of the Blast in the standings.

THURSDAY

MILWAUKEE 18, MISSOURI 6: Luan Oliveira had a six-point night as the Milwaukee Wave rolled past the Missouri Comets in front of 3,026 fans at the Independence Events Center. The offensive output move the rookie into the top 10 of the league's scoring leaders with 35 points, while Josh Rife and Marcelo Fontana each added a pair of goals.

The Wave took a 4-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, Rife and Fontana each finding the back of the net. After a scoreless second period, Milwaukee scored twice in the opening six minutes of the third as Oliveira opened his account and Rife got his second to make it 8-0.

Missouri pulled a goal back through Byron Alvarez, but the Wave then put the contest out of reach in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. Joe Hammes began the scoring run 22 seconds into the period, and Nick Perera then struck from 3-point range to make it 13-2. Oliveira then added a 3-pointer of his own before Fontana scored his second to make it 18-2.

Missouri pulled a pair of goals back late on, Alvarez scoring his second to give him a league-high 27 goals, and John Sosa scoring with 42 seconds to play, but the gap was too big for the Comets to bridge as they dropped their second game at home this season.

FRIDAY

CHICAGO 13, BALTIMORE 8: The Chicago Soul got late goals from Carlos Farias and Matt Stewart to pull away from the Baltimore Blast at the Sears Centre Arena. Farias' game-winning 3-pointer capped a six-point night for the former MVP, and gave the Soul their second consecutive win against the Blast and fourth win in their past five games.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Blast took the lead through Adauto Neto, but Carlos Muñoz pulled the Soul even before the halftime break. Chicago then took its first lead of the game as Fred Degand found the back of the net to open a back-and-forth third quarter that saw four goals in the final two minutes.

Marco Mangione began the run of goals, tying the game for the Blast with 1:59 to play, but Eric Lukin restored the Soul's lead 13 seconds later. Farias then give Chicago a four-point lead with 52 seconds to play in the quarter, but Mike Lookingland scored 17 seconds later to pull the Blast within a goal going to the fourth quarter.

Pat Healey then tied the game for the Blast midway through the fourth quarter, but Chicago was able to pull away as Farias' shot from the left side of the arc found its way through a group of players in front of the net. Stewart then added an empty-net insurance goal with nine seconds to play to seal the victory.

SATURDAY

WICHITA 12, MISSOURI 11: The Wichita Wings overcame the absence of two key players to remain in fourth place in the MISL standings at the end of the weekend's action as they held off the Missouri Comets in front of a crowd of 3,100 at Hartman Arena. Six different players found the net for the Wings in the absence of leading scorer Geison and fellow forward Matt Clare.

After a tight first quarter, the Comets got on the board first when Leo Gibson scored with four seconds to play in the period to put his side up 2-0. Wichita hit back quickly in the second, however, as Kevin Ten Eyck brought his side level 1:46 into the period before Miguel Ferrer put his side ahead for the first time.

Wichita added to its lead with less than four minutes to play in the half, Edvin Worley finding the back of the net, but Missouri made it a two-point game less than a minute later through Gibson's second. The Comets standout then completed his hat trick 15 seconds into the third quarter, on a power play, to tie the game, but Wichita restored its lead two minutes later as Adrian Gonzalez scored his first goal for the club to make it 8-6.

Missouri's Vahid Assadpour put his side back in front as he scored his first goal in five games, from 3-point range, but the Wings regained the lead less than two minutes later as Andre Berenzon scored his first goal since his trade from the Syracuse Silver Knights and an injury layoff to make it 10-9. Victor Quiroz then made it a three-point game midway through the fourth quarter, and while the Comets were able to pull back a short-handed goal through Ramone Palmer with just more than four minutes to play, the Wings were able to hold on for their second win against their rival this season.

SYRACUSE 15, ROCHESTER 14: Marcos Chantel's 3-pointer with 1:48 to play gave the Syracuse Silver Knights their fourth win this season against the Rochester Lancers in front of 8,217 fans at the Blue Cross Arena, moving his side off the bottom of the MISL standings as it snapped a five-game losing streak.

In a game that swung back and forth throughout, the Silver Knights took an early lead through Neto, but Mauricio Salles then recorded a first-half hat trick around the first intermission to give his side a 6-2 lead midway through the second quarter. Syracuse hit back with a run of its own, Jamar Beasley scoring his first goal in three games to cut the lead to 6-4.

Bozidar Jelovac then tied the game for Syracuse, before a pair of goals by Neto and Nelson Santana in the final minute of the half gave the Silver Knights a 10-6 lead at the break. Rochester wrested the momentum back at the start of the third quarter, however, as Doug Miller scored 43 seconds in to begin a four-goal run for the Lancers. Salles scored his fourth to bring the sides level again, and goals by Rey Martinez and Elliot Fauske gave their side a 14-10 lead going to the fourth quarter.

The Lancers maintained their lead for the opening 10 minutes of the fourth, but the Silver Knights were handed a life-line with 4:40 to play as Nate Bourdeau finished off a close-range chance to cut the deficit to two. Chantel then drove home a shot from the right side of the arc for his first tally of the season, and the Lancers were unable to respond before time expired, dropping to their sixth consecutive defeat.
