Wambach Wins WPS Player of the Week
July 28, 2009 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) News Release
Washington forward Abby Wambach has been selected WPS's Player of the Week for Week 18 after scoring two goals to lead the visiting Freedom to a 3-2 victory the Chicago Red Stars and into a tie with Sky Blue FC for fourth place.
Wambach, who netted her fourth and fifth goals of the season to prod Washington (6-6-5) ahead early in the second half, is the second player honored twice as Women's Professional Soccer's Player of the Week, joining Los Angeles Sol star Marta. Wambach also was WPS's top player in Week 5.
Freedom players have been selected on four occasions, with Sonia Bompastor winning in Week 6 and Erin McLeod in Week 13. Wambach is among six U.S. national team standouts chosen; the others were Los Angeles Sol midfielders Aly Wagner (Week 4) and Shannon Boxx (Week 10), Saint Louis Athletica midfielder Lori Chalupny (Week 7), Chicago Red Stars forward Lindsay Tarpley (Week 15) and Sky Blue FC forward Natasha Kai (Week 17).
WPS's Player of the Week award is selected by a panel of writers with the North American Soccer Reporters.
