Wambach Honored with WPS Record Seventh Career Player of the Week Title
August 11, 2011 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) News Release
San Francisco, CA (August 11, 2011) - Abby Wambach scored four goals in two games as magicJack sprinted into the Women's Professional Soccer playoffs, and her effort was rewarded with the Player of the Week award - for a record seventh time.
The South Florida-based club's top striker and head coach provided two leads in a 3-2 midweek victory over Sky Blue FC and netted two more in last weekend's 2-0 triumph at Boston. The victories lifted magicJack (8-6-2) into third place and clinched one of four WPS playoff berths.
Wambach won the Player of the Week award in Week 8 after scoring a hat trick for magicJack, and has previously earned the title five times in her first two seasons with the Washington Freedom. Historically, Wamabch has finished seasons convincingly and has now won the honor five times in the final three weeks of regular season play.
Despite only having made appearances in 11 games so far this season, Wambach has scored nine goals in WPS competition and is just one tally away from tying the current league-leading total of 10 goals set by Western New York Flash Forward Christine Sinclair.
A mainstay of the US Women's National Team, Wambach is one of the world's top goal scorers and most prolific finishers in women's soccer history. Wambach's 122 international goal total is good for third in the all-time leaders for goals behind Mia Hamm (158) and Kristine Lilly (130). The Rochester native recently garnered top honors at the 2011 Women's World Cup, receiving the Silver Ball as the tournament's second MVP, and Bronze Boot for her four goals scored during the tournament. Thirteen of Wambach's international goals were scored during World Cup play, topping the list of USWNTgoal totals in World Cup competition, and tying her for second all-time in FIFA history for career Women's World Cup goal totals.
The WPS Player of Week is selected by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters.
