Wambach Earns July Honors

ATLANTA (Thursday, July 31, 2003) - Washington forward Abby Wambach has been selected as the WUSA's Player of the Month for July by the Professional Soccer Reporters Association. The powerful striker recorded several standout performances, including two multiple goal games and three game-winning goals, making her the most prolific offensive player in the WUSA during July.

Wambach sizzled during the month of July, topping the league charts with six goals and 13 points. The 5-foot-10 forward began the month recording an assist on Washington's lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Boston on Thursday, July 3. Days later, she put two goals in the back of the net against Philadelphia to lead the Freedom to a 4-2 win over the Charge on Wednesday, July 9. The scoring phenom also earned MET-Rx Player of the Week honors for Week 16 after scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over New York on Saturday, July 19.

Wambach, the 2002 Rookie of the Year, led the WUSA in multiple-goal games in July (2) and is tied for the league lead this season (3). The former University of Florida star has buried the game-winning goal for the Freedom three times this month for a total of four this season, leading the WUSA in both categories.

With six goals in as many games during the month, Wambach is tied for first as the WUSA's 2003 leading goal scorer (11) and ranks second in the league in points (26). Wambach led the league in points per game (2.17) and scored half (6 of 12) of the Freedom's goals during July.
