Waikiki BeachBoys News Release

Despite striking out 13 times, the Waikiki offensive unit eked out a 2-1 win over West Oahu tonight at Honolulu's Les Murakami Stadium.

The BeachBoys (5-7) brought across two runs in the eighth frame as Roger Kieschnick tripled to the left-center field gap to score Yonder Alonso from first. Kieschnick then came home on a Daiki Kiyohara wild pitch to put Waikiki up 2-0.

Miles Durham drove in Jim Negrych on a bloop single to center field to pull the CaneFires within a run of the lead in the home half of the ninth. Durham moved over to third on a Cyle Hankerd single with two outs, but ensuing batter James Skelton struck out to end the game.

Kieschnick and catcher Austin Romine each collected two base hits in support of the BeachBoys.

West Oahu (6-6) received a team-high two hits from Mark Hallberg, and Negrych's double served as the squad's lone extra-base hit.

Waikiki starter Jeremy Bleich of the New York Yankees did not factor in the decision despite tossing six scoreless innings through which he allowed four hits and struck out six CaneFires. Reliever Kazunori Yamamoto (1-0) earned the win, throwing two scoreless innings while Javier Guerra picked up the save in the ninth.

Kiyohara (0-1) took the loss after allowing both BeachBoys runs.

Both squads return to Murakami Stadium at 7 p.m. tomorrow for the second game of a three-game set.
