Waikiki Wins Wild One, Takes HWB East Lead

Waikiki racked up 15 hits and took advantage of five Honolulu errors as the BeachBoys downed the Sharks, 13-9 in seven innings, this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park. The win moved Waikiki (13-14) ahead of Honolulu (12-14-1) for first place in the Hawaii Winter Baseball East Division by a slim ½ game margin.

Michael Wilson crushed his fourth home run of the year, a grand slam in the third inning, and his two base hits on the afternoon elevated the Seattle Mariners prospect's batting average to .354. Teammate Dan Murphy chipped in four hits including a double and home run while also driving in a pair. Lucas Duda and Jose Coronado each chipped in two RBIs for Waikiki and Justin Sellers added a solo home run.

Josh Sullivan (1-3, 5.68 ERA) earned his first win of the season as the BeachBoys starter struck out four through four innings in which he allowed two earned runs on two hits. Zach Simons notched his first save despite surrendering two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Fuminori Yokogawa paced the Sharks at the plate, going 2-4 with a double and 4 RBIs. Teammate Kyler Burke added two doubles and drove in a run in defeat. Takuya Furuya (3-2, 6.00 ERA) took the loss after allowing nine runs on 10 hits in five innings.

Both teams have tomorrow off as Honolulu travels to the Big Island to take on the West Oahu CaneFires in Hilo on Friday.
