Amarillo Venom News Release
Rio Rancho, N.M. - The Amarillo Venom began their quest for a third consecutive Lone Star Football League championship on the right foot on March 14, using a huge second half to power past the New Mexico Stars, 63-21.
The first quarter was all Venom, as the defense kept the Stars from scoring on their opening possession. From there Amarillo was able to convert the defensive stop into offensive points, culminating in a 30 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brendan Crawford to DJ Beshears. After a Mike Maldonado interception kept the Stars off of the scoreboard, Crawford would toss another 30 yard touchdown pass, this time to Raymond Johnson Jr. to give the Venom a 14-0 advantage at the end of the quarter.
New Mexico would show some life in the following quarter of play, however, as the Stars would keep rally back within seven points with a 1:03 remaining in the first half. Following some touchdown exchanges from both squads, the Venom and the Stars headed into the locker room with Amarillo on top, 28-21.
In the second half, the Venom reasserted their dominance, denying New Mexico any sort of scoring opportunity. By the end of the third quarter, Amarillo fullback Undre Hendrix and DJ Beshears captured a touchdown rush and touchdown pass respectively, giving the Venom a 42-21 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter would resume the Venom's strong play on both sides of the ball, as Hendrix would score his second touchdown of the night while Crawford and Beshears hooked up for another score from 45 yards with five minutes remaining in the game. To finish off the Stars for good, wide receiver/defensive back Shaka Harris would find paydirt once more for the Venom with 3.9 seconds left.
The Amarillo Venom will look to continue to fire on all cylinders as they prepare for the International Championship against the LEXFA All-Stars from Mexico City on March 23 at 4 p.m., while the New Mexico Stars hope to rebound on March 29 against the West Texas Wildcatters.
