Vegas Vipers and Arlington Rengegades Exchange Quarterback Luis Perez for Linebacker Ryan Mueller
March 28, 2023 - XFL (XFL)
Vegas Vipers News Release
LAS VEGAS - The Vegas Vipers and Arlington Renegades agreed today to trade quarterback Luis Perez in exchange for linebacker Ryan Mueller.
Perez, 28, has appeared in five games this season for the Vipers and has made four starts. Through Week 6, Perez is 79-of-121 for 901 yards and eight touchdowns to go with five interceptions. He has also ran the ball five times for 26 yards. Amongst quarterbacks in the XFL this season, Perez leads the league with 7.4 yards per attempt, ranks second in completion percentage with 65.3%, fourth with 901 passing yards, fourth in touchdowns with eight and has been sacked the second fewest times (all categories amongst QBs with 100 minimum attempts). He served as Vegas' starter going into the season and played the entire Week 1 game at Arlington. Perez only threw five passes in Week 2 against DC and missed the Week 3 game against Seattle. He came in for relief at DC in Week 4 and earned his second start of the season in Week 5 against Orlando. Perez's final start as a Viper came against St. Louis in Week 6, where he was 13-of-20 for 99 yards and two interceptions. The California native has been part of a few NFL training camps but most of his professional experience has come in numerous spring football leagues. Perez has compiled some pretty impressive statistics amongst the alternative leagues as he is the only quarterback to earn a victory in the XFL (2023), USFL, The Spring League, XFL (2020) and the AAF. He also owns the distinction of throwing the first touchdown pass in the XFL this season, a five-yard connection with Jeff Badet at Arlington (Feb. 18) and throwing for the first touchdown in the USFL in 2022.
Mueller, 31, has not appeared in a game for the Renegades this season. He was cut at the end of training camp on February 8, re-signed on March 15, and was inactive for each of the team's last two games. Mueller was selected in the Defensive Front Seven Phase of the XFL Draft (Round 7, Pick 51). The linebacker, who played at Kansas State from 2010-14, has professional experience in the NFL, CFL, and XFL.
The Vegas Vipers will play their final home game at Cashman Field on Saturday, April 1 against the San Antonio Brahmas at 12 p.m. PT and the game will be televised on ESPN2. The Arlington Renegades will host the Seattle Sea Dragons on Friday, March 31 at 6 p.m. CT on FX.
