Vancouver Native Signs with Whitecaps FC

VANCOUVER, BC =26ndash; Vancouver, BC, native and former Canadian U-20 international Alex Elliott has joined Vancouver Whitecaps FC of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) D-2 Pro League - pending his international transfer certificate. Per club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Elliott, 23, joins his hometown club after spending the last three years in Germany. The 5-foot-9, 155-pound outside midfielder - who can also play up front as a striker - spent the last two seasons with FSV Mainz 05. In 25 appearances with the O-Fives reserve side, Elliott scored two goals and added five assists. He began his professional career with Sportfreunde Siegen of the Regionalliga S=26uuml;d (then the third tier in Germany) midway through the 2007-08 season. In five matches with Sportfreunde Siegen, Elliott contributed with two assists.

Prior to his move overseas, Elliott attended the University of Portland from 2005 to 2007 and played three seasons with the Pilots. During his time on The Bluff, Elliott received All-West Coast Conference honours in his three years with Portland. This included a first-team selection in 2007, a second-team selection in 2006, and a spot in the all-freshman team in 2005. Elliott concluded his collegiate career with 21 goals - including 10 match-winning goals - and 10 assists in 56 appearances.

Internationally, Elliott has played for Canada at the U-15, U-17, and U-20 levels. A member of Canada=27s U-20 team from 2005 to 2007, Elliott earned 16 caps, while scoring four goals for his country.

The midfielder began playing soccer locally with Vancouver=27s Dunbar Soccer Association and was a member of the British Columbia provincial team program as a youngster.

Whitecaps FC=27s (5W-2L-5D) next match is this Saturday, June 26, when they battle NASL Conference rivals Athletic Club of St. Louis (2W-7L-1D) at Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton, Missouri. Saturday=26rsquo;s match kicks off at 5 p.m. PT and can be seen live online at whitecapsfc.com/live.
