TRAVERSE CITY - Each time the Traverse City North Stars lit the lamp on Friday night at Centre ICE arena, the Mahoning Valley Phantoms had an answer. A quick one.
Finally, it was the Phantoms who went unrequited, scoring the final four goals in a 6-2 affair.
Clinton Bourbonais got the host Stars on the board first, with a power play effort at 7:36 of the first period, set up by Alex Breeden and Jarrod LaBelle. Just over a minute and a half later, Chad Boeckman evened things up with a power play marker of his own. Derek Graham made it 2-1 in favor of the Phantoms on a second period shorthanded tally, but LaBelle registered an equalizer assisted by Eric McLintock and Jameson Raymond. It took Grant Blakey just 34 second to put the visitors in front again, and a trio of Mahoning scores in the third made it a four-goal final margin.
"We skated with them for about the first half of the game but they beat us to pucks, outskated us, and just generally outplayed us from then on," surmised Stars head coach/GM Anthony Palumbo. "It wasn't our best game, to be sure, and we expect a totally different kind of effort on Saturday."
Brandon Stephenson made 21 saves for Traverse City (5-4-3), while Garrett Bartus stopped 23 of the 25 shots he saw for Mahoning (8-4-1).
The teams square off again on Saturday at Centre ICE arena as the North Stars aim to get back on track after a one-week layoff before Friday's affair.
