USL Week 13 pro honors announced

July 7, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release

TAMPA, FL -- United Soccer Leagues announced the Team of the Week honors for the 13th week of the USL season, honoring Charleston's Dusty Hudock as the USL First Division Player of the Week and Richmond's David Bulow as the USL Second Division Player of the Week.

Coming off a 3-1 US Open Cup victory over Chivas USA Tuesday, the Charleston Battery moved back to the top of the table Sunday in Montreal, two days before their next tournament match, with a 1-0 victory led by Dusty Hudock.

In the 30th minute defender Nevio Pizzolitto's long pass connected with forward Joey Gjertsen, who made a cross for midfielder Rocco Placentino. Placentino took a point blank shot that goalkeeper Dusty Hudock saved at the near post.

David Testo in the 78th minute took a low powerful shot from about 20 meters out that grazed the Battery far post after Hudock got a fingertip to the ball in the box.

The veteran goalkeeper Dusty Hudock recorded seven saves to preserve his league-leading 10th shutout of the season, a total twice that of second-place Caleb Patterson in Carolina. His goals against average is also exceedingly low at 0.215 through 14 games.

With Wilmington falling to Charlotte, the Kickers took advantage with a win over the same Eagles squad to claim sole possession of second in the table with a 3-0 win over the visitors. Striker David Bulow had a hand in all three tallies.

On the 10 minute mark Mike Burke delivered a corner into the box. The ball was cleared out but Yomby William collected the rebound and fired on goal. Stationed inches from the goal, Bulow redirected the strike with his back heel and buried the ball from close range.

Doubling the lead in the 34th minute, Gerson dos Santos and Bulow played a give-and-go in a crowded midfield. Eluding the last defender, dos Santos attempted a shot that was blocked by Ceus. Collecting the deflection, dos Santos rounded the goalkeeper and poked it across the open goalmouth, curling the ball to the far post and into the goal for his first as a professional.

The Kickers replicated their first goal of the night 39 minutes into the first half, when William again recovered a cleared corner and was able to shoot from the top of the box. Bulow, positioned at the left post was able to get another touch on the ball and his deflection gave the home side a stifling three-goal lead.

Having the match in control proved critical for the Kickers as William would be sent off just four minutes later for taking down Amaury Nunes in a goal scoring opportunity. Up by three, the Kickers kept the visitors off the board for the shutout.
