Coggins repeats as Scoring Champion

TAMPA, FL - United Soccer Leagues announced the statistical award winners for the USL Second Division Wednesday for the 2005 season. Charlotte players nearly swept the four honors for the second straight year. The lone player to sneak in was from fellow finalist Western Mass.

Scoring Champion & Goal Scoring Champion

Jacob Coggins (Charlotte Eagles)

The 2004 MVP did not dominate in the scoring table as he did with last season's 20-goal, 10-assist campaign, but still managed a league-leading 14 strikes for the Goal Scoring title with four assists to give him the Scoring Championship on 32 points, one better than Harrisburg's Chad Severs, who also finished second in the Goals table with 13. Coggins is the second player in USL Second Division history to repeat in both categories, third to win the honors twice. Luis Orrellana won the awards in 1998 and 1999 and Julio-Cesar Dos Santos won in 2000 and 2002.

Assist Leader

Neil Krause (Western Mass Pioneers)

An honor shared by Charlotte's Jacob Coggins and Dustin Swinehart last year, Western Mass Pioneers forward Neil Krause beat out two Wilmington Hammerheads players by one with seven assists on the season to take the honor. Krause also scored 10 goals, ranking fifth, for 27 points this season, which ranked fourth in the league with Swinehart.

Goalkeeper of the Year

Chris McClellan (Charlotte Eagles)

Although the award changes hands this season, it will remain with the same club as Chris McClellan took home the Goalkeeper of the Year with the league's lowest goals against average at 0.85 (minimum of 900 minutes). McClellan followed in the shoes of Eric Pattison, who won the honor last year with a 0.62 average. McClellan, who finished ahead of Wilmington's Jordan James (0.90), allowed 16 goals in 19 appearances (1,690 minutes) this season, posting a record of 13-4-2 with seven shutouts. He also led the league in wins and shutouts, beating out Western Mass goalkeeper Bryan O'Quinn, who had 12 wins and five shutouts.

The All-League Teams will be announced Thursday with the remaining season awards announced Friday.

The Eagles will play the Western Mass Pioneers Saturday, August 27, for the USL Second Division Championship. The game will be played at 7:30 pm and be televised on Fox Soccer Channel at 11:00 pm that night. It is Charlotte's fifth appearance in the final (1996, 1997, 2000, 2004) with a championship in 2000. It is the Pioneers's second appearance in the final, having won the title in 1999.
