USL Championship Exploring Options to Return to Action as Suspension Is Extended

April 30, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release

TAMPA - The United Soccer League announced on Thursday afternoon that it has extended the temporary suspension of the USL Championship season past the previously announced date of May 10 due to the dangers that remain present from the novel coronavirus and COVID-19. No firm return date has been set as the league continues to receive guidance from national, state and local authorities.

"We are all excited for the return of soccer and can't wait to get back out playing the game we love," said FC Tulsa president James Cannon. "While we were hopeful of resuming play in May, we appreciate the USL looking out for the safety of players, coaches, gameday staff and all fans. FC Tulsa continues to hold the safety of Tulsa as our highest priority, and we will always put our community at the forefront of any decisions we make as an organization."

The USL has not ruled out a full season in 2020 for FC Tulsa and the rest of the USL Championship clubs and is still in a position to reschedule all matches. While the league is prioritizing a full season, it is also exploring numerous competitive formats of the 2020 season.

In addition to the suspension of the season, the USL also announced that its full team training moratorium would be extended through May 15, but teams could return to training facilities prior to that date for individual and/or small group sessions. Any re-opening of club facilities will be in accordance to each club's state and local guidelines.
