USL-2 Playoff Field Set
August 11, 2009 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release
The Real Maryland Monarchs clinched the fifth and final USL Second Division playoff spot this past Saturday, August 8 with their 4-3 win over the Bermuda Hogges. All three of Bermuda's goals were sandwiched between a pair of goals by Real's Jamie Holmes and Kevin King. King's game-winner and playoff clinching goal was scored in the 82nd minute.
The win moves the Monarchs into a first round playoff with the Charlotte Eagles. The site of that match depends on this week's results. The Monarchs travel to second place Wilmington on Wednesday, August 12. The Eagles host seventh place Western Mass at Charlotte Christian this Saturday. A win by Charlotte insures that Eagles icons Ben Johnson and Dustin Swinehart will play at least one more playoff match on their home turf.
On top of the standings, Richmond has overtaken Harrisburg and Wilmington and currently leads the league with 38 points. The Hammerheads (35) however, have a match in hand over the Kickers. A Wilmington victory against Real Maryland tomorrow sets up a showdown for the regular season championship when the Kickers host the Hammerheads on Saturday, August 15.
