The United States Football week completed its sixth week of the 2023 regular season with resurgent teams eyeing playoff positions.
On Saturday the Memphis Showboats shut out the Pittsburgh Maulers, and the defending champion Birmingham Stallions defeated the Michigan Panthers. The Philadelphia Stars edged the New Orleans Breakers, and the Houston Gamblers held on against the New Jersey Generals on Sunday.
Week seven begins Saturday with a showdown in Birmingham as the 4-2 Stallions seek revenge against 4-2 New Orleans. The day continues in Canton, Ohio, with 3-3 Philadelphia facing 2-4 Pittsburgh. On Sunday, 4-2 Houston lines up at 3-3 Memphis, and 2-4 Michigan faces 2-4 New Jersey in Canton.
The power rankings after week six:
1. Houston Gamblers 4-2
The Gamblers are the hottest team in the league, sporting a four-game winning streak thanks to a strong running game under powerful Mark Thompson and a defense which has made stops at the right times.
2. Birmingham Stallions 4-2
Alex McGough might be the best quarterback in the league, and last week he led the way with two passing touchdowns and one rushing score in their victory over the Panthers.
3. New Orleans Breakers 4-2
The Breakers offense has committed five turnovers during the last two games, both losses. They have to figure out how to get the offense back to the level at which they played the first four weeks of the season.
4. Philadelphia Stars 3-3
Seemingly adrift after the first month, the Stars have won back-to-back games with special teams play and tough defense. If the offense gels, they might be the team to beat in the North Division.
5. Memphis Showboats 3-3
After starting the season 0-3 the Showboats have rallied to win three straight, finally earning their first victory at home over the Maulers. A previously leaky defense shut out Pittsburgh.
6. New Jersey Generals 2-4
The Generals have suffered three straight losses, all by one score. Their defense remains tough, but offensive consistency has been hard to find.
7. Pittsburgh Maulers 2-4
The Maulers sport the best defense in the USFL, only giving up 17 points per game, but the offense might be coming off its worst performance in a shutout loss to the Showboats.
8. Michigan Panthers 2-4
The Panthers have lost four straight games at home. Maybe the good news is they are on the road this week where they are a perfect in two tries.
