USFL Head Coaches by the Numbers

The United States Football League has named its eight coaches for the league's inaugural season which begins April 16, 2022. To recap, in the North Division Jeff Fisher will lead the Michigan Panthers, Mike Riley helms the New Jersey Generals, Bart Andrus lands at the Philadelphia Stars, and Kirby Wilson commands the Pittsburgh Maulers. In the South Division Skip Holtz coaches the Birmingham Stallions, Kevin Sumlin takes charge at the Houston Gamblers, Larry Fedora guides the New Orleans Breakers and Todd Haley directs the fortunes of the Tampa Bay Bandits.

Here a closer look at the USFL's coaches, by the numbers.

  • 1 - Super Bowl appearance by Michigan head coach Jeff Fisher with the Tennessee Titans. Tennessee lost to the St. Louis Rams, 23-16, in Super Bowl XXXIV.
  • 1 - NFL Europe World Bowl XIII Championship for Bart Andrus with the Amsterdam Admirals in 2005. They defeated the Berlin Thunder, 27-21.
  • 1 - SEC Coach of the Year award for Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin while he was at Texas A&M in 2012.
  • 1 - Conference USA Championship for New Orleans head coach Larry Fedora while he was at Southern Mississippi in 2011.
  • 2 - CFL Grey Cup championships won as a coach for New Jersey head coach Mike Riley while with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. They defeated the British Columbia Lions, 22-21, in 1988. In 1990 they dominated the Edmonton Eskimos, 50-11.
  • 2 - Super Bowl championships for Pittsburgh head coach Kirby Wilson as a running backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003 and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII in 2009.
  • 2 - Conferences USA Coach of the Year for Birmingham head man Skip Holtz, one at East Carolina in 2008 and another at Louisiana Tech in 2016.
  • 2 - Seasons played in the CFL by Pittsburgh head coach Kirby Wilson as a defensive back and kick returner for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Toronto Argonauts between 1983 and 1984.
  • 3 - Bowl game victories by New Orleans head coach Larry Fedora.
  • 3 - NFL Division titles by Michigan head coach Jeff Fisher.
  • 4 - Bowl game victories by Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin.
  • 5 - Total Wins by New Jersey head coach Mike Riley for the AAF San Antonio Commaders in 2019. His final record was 5-3 after the league suspended operations.
  • 7 - Bowl game victories by New Jersey head coach Mike Riley.
  • 7 - Seasons coached in NFL Europe with the Amsterdam Admirals by Philadelphia head coach Bart Andrus.
  • 8 - Bowl game victories by Birmingham head coach Skip Holtz.
