USL-2 Cleveland knocks off Minnesota 2-0 in overtime

The Cleveland City Stars are the lone USL Second Division club to down a USL First Division side on the night to move onto the Third Round of the US Open Cup with a 2-0 overtime victory against Minnesota. Charleston edged Charlotte 3-2, Carolina nipped Real Maryland 1-0 and Rochester blanked Pittsburgh 3-0.

Penalties played a pivotal role on the night. Two of three taken during play were late game-winners with the third ensuring a two-goal lead in overtime. The USL-2 Harrisburg-Crystal Palace showdown would be decided via a penalty tiebreaker.

Cleveland upends Minnesota 2-0 in OT The USL-2 side became the first side to put more than one past the Thunder at home this season, handing Minnesota just its second home loss in seven competitive matches this year. With both teams boasting less than a goal per game allowed through their league seasons, the two clubs played a scoreless stalemate in regulation to force overtime. Cleveland would finally break through just before the extra time break on a goal from Floyd Franks in the 104th. A penalty two minutes from time converted by Franks provided a cushion as the Stars registered the lone upset of the night among interleague match-ups. Full Report [+]

Battery bounce Eagles 2-1 In a battle of Carolina clubs, the Battery were victorious at home in Charleston, South Carolina against their former league foe Eagles from Charlotte, North Carolina. Darren Spicer buried a rebounded save 12 minutes in. Charlotte midfield star Jorge Herrera leveled terms in the 67th only to see Charleston win in the final minute from the spot courtesy of Osvaldo Alonso. Full Report [+]

Carolina clips Monarchs 1-0 Real Maryland nearly pushed the higher division side to the brink before a penalty proved their downfall in the final minute of scoreless stalemate in regulation. Rochester rolls past Pittsburgh 3-0 After a convincing win over amateur competition in the First Round, the Riverhounds, winless in USL-2 league play, were unable to find glory via the US Open Cup against the Rhinos, the lone team to win the tournament since the inception of MLS. Johnny Menyongar opened the scoring for Rochester 26 minutes in. Mauricio Salles scored the second in the 61st on an assist from Steve Guppy, who would be sent off nine minutes later. Pittsburgh's hopes with a man advantage were dashed in the 75th with a strike from an indirect free kick six yards from goal courtesy of a handled back pass. Full Report [+]

The Lone USL-1 Showdown

Miami slips past Silverbacks 1-0 Josh Saunders entered the match on a 590 minute shutout streak in league play and kept the standard in tact against their league rivals, who were coming off a big offensive performance last week. Saunders' shutout on a rainy night in Miami was complemented by a 40th minute goal from star Brazilian striker Alex Afonso. Full Report [+]

Two USL-2 Confrontations

Kickers win 2-1 at Western Mass Richmond completed a sweep of the Pioneers having beaten their league foe in their previous two regular season encounters. The match went to the second stanza scoreless before Kelvin Jones broke the deadlock with a strike in the 59th only to see Jeff Deren level terms four minutes later. Stanley Nyazamba put Richmond through to the Third Round for the eighth time since 1997. Full Report [+]

Palace win in penalties in Harrisburg With three of their four previous meetings decided by one goal or less, it was no surprise Crystal Palace Baltimore and the defending USL-2 champion Harrisburg City Islanders found themselved dueling from the spot. Harrisburg's championship netminder Matt Nelson returned to haunt them with three saves in the tiebreaker and setting up both Palace goals with long punts. In a wild game that saw a player sent off in regulation for both sides, the match was level at 1-1 through 90. The hosts took the lead in overtime and were headed to the next round before seeing Matthew Mbuta strike in the final moments of extra time.

Final Act for Amateurs

Sounders crush Hollywood's hopes 6-0 If two early goals 15 minutes in for the hosts were not enough, star French striker Sebastien Le Toux shattered the glass slipper for the Cinderella side with four consecutive goals, two in each half, to send Seattle to the Third Round.
